Endless-chain machines; feeding materials; moulds ; pressing plungers and dies; moulding india-rubber ; heating moulds; coating apparatus.-Relates to the filling of moulds with viscous, plastic, or semiplastic material, particularly india-rubber, and consists in transferring a measured quantity of the material from a measuring chamber into a detachable mould which is then closed by a closing member and bodily removed. The apparatus comprises one or more measuring chambers and one or more detachable moulds adapted to be brought into registration by a reciprocatory, oscillatory, or rotary motion. As shown in Fig: 1, moulds g are detachably located on a disc h by spigots m and are brought into alignment with measuring-chambers in a disc b co-operating with a charging receptacle a. A disc e supports loose closing members or dies f which are forced into the moulds, together with a charge of material, by a plunger i and locked by spring tongues l engaging notches l<1> in the mould walls. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the measuring-chambers c are formed in a rotary, annular member b, the dies f being introduced through a stationary member e. Shields d, d<1> prevent escape of material. A modification of this arrangement is described in which the dies f are introduced into the chambers c before the material, the shield d being extended. To ensure accurate measurement of the material, the shield d may be apertured as shown in Fig. 4, to permit excess of material to pass through the chamber c, this excess being sheared off by the movement of the member b. In a further modification, the member b is stationary and co-operates with movable, cut-off slides. A number of charges of material may be introduced into a mould: also metallic insertions between the charges. Fig. 8 shows a modification in which the moulds g are placed on an intermittently-moving conveyer h and pass successively beneath a heating-plunger p ; a plunger q for introducing dressing-material such as powdered chalk, collodion, etc.; plungers v, t, k<1> for introducing respectively charges r of material and an intermediate metal plate s ; and finally beneath the plunger i for introducing the die or closing-member f.
