Abstract

224,931. Rayner, G. F., (Matson Lace Tipping Machine Co.). July 18, 1923. Moulding celluloid and rubber lace-tips.-Consists of a machine for tipping shoe laces, corset laces, &c. with a material, such as celluloid or a rubber compound, capable of being moulded while heated in the presence of a solvent, and for severing a continuous length of lacing at each successive point where the impregnation and moulding is effected, to form two lace ends and in such manner as to ensure the flow of the celluloid &c. material over the severed ends. The machine is belt-driven and is provided with an automatic clutch-device which interrupts the operation at each revolution for a brief period during which the impregnated portion of the lacing is under compression. The continuous length of lacing 97, Fig. 1, is drawn by the machine through an eye 146 in a lever 145, which is adapted to stop the machine if a knot &c. in the lacing engages in the eye. The feed-shaft 75 is driven by gearing from the pulley-shaft 15. At its outer end, the shaft 75 has a radial arm 95, shown in plan in Fig. 3, through a tube 96 at the end of which the lacing 97 is passed. As the arm 95 revolves with the shaft 75, it carries the lacing around lateral guide-bars and across the links of two intermittently driven feed-chains 46, which are adapted to grip the lacing at two points, the portion between these points being first impregnated at its middle and then moved up to the building and severing dies by the chains. The celluloid &c. is contained in a tank 100, into which dips an arm 109, pivoted at 108, when a lever 102 is rocked by a cam 104 on the shaft 75. The arm 109 has on it a fixed fingerr or jaw 110 and a movable. jaw 111, which, when the arm 109 rises out of the tank, grip between them the centre portion of the crosswise length of lacing and squeeze into it the fluid material carried up by the jaws from the tank. The jaw 111 is actuated by an arm 119 on a vertical rod 116, which is operated by a second cam 118 on the shaft 75. The impregnated lacing is carried by the feed chains between upper and lower electric heating-elements 34, 71 until it passes over an adjustable lower die 187. The upper co-operating die 40 is carried by a cross-head 28 reciprocated bv an eccentric 19 on the drive-shaft 15. These two dies are shown in sectional plan in Fig. 13 and comprise tip-moulding recessed portions 190, 191, and a punch or cutter 40<a> on the die 40 and a corresponding recess 189 in the die 187. After the severing operation, the pressure of the dies causes the impregnating material to flow over the severed ends of the lacing- When the cross-head moves forward again, after the brief period of rest referred to, the ends of the lacing are freed from the chain-links and are withdrawn by means actuated by the crosshead 28. The intermittent movement of the feed chains 46 is obtained by means of a ratchet- and-pawl device operated by an adjustable tappet on the cross-head 28.
