Abstract
A calculator for on-line operation with a computer, which comprises two sockets for connection in series with a computer mainframe and a keyboard respectively. Through the control of a selector switch on the calculator, the result of calculation displayed on the calculator can be transmitted to the computer. When switched off, the keyboard remains connected with the computer for on-line operation. <IMAGE>
Description
STRUCTURE OF CALCULATOR
FOR ON-LINE OPERATION WITH COMPUTER
The present invention is related to calculators, and more particularly to a calculator which can be connected to a computer for on-line operation.
In regular computerized operation, entry form is commonly provided for utilizing a data bank or specially designed application software. The data which is obtained through calculation is directly keyed in by an operator. Error may occur during key-in operation (wrong number may be erroneously keyed in due to mistake).
Further, regular resident programs (for example: Side Kick) can alternatively change the operation between a calculator function and an application software with display through a monitor.
Basically, a resident program is a software switching program which may cause bug during software operation, and compatibility problem (during calculator mode, it still uses CPU to calculate data). The original entry form may be damaged easily when entered calculator mode.
Further the result of calculation can not be directly sent to the computer. It must jump to original application program for a new start to key in the data.
Recently, there is provided a structure of keyboard incorporated with a calculator. Still there is another type of keyboard structure which provides calculation function. Both types of keyboard structures are each comprised of LCD, microprocessor, multiplexer, calculator, flip flop, and common keys.
In these types of keyboard structures, multiplexer is used as a switch for functional selection between calculator mode and keyboard mode; flip flop is used to control multiplexer for functional selection on common keys. These types of keyboard structures are no more a keyboard and very expensive to manufacture. A regular keyboard can not be used for such functional operation.
The present invention has been accomplished under the circumstances in view. It is the main object of the present invention to provide a calculator for online operation with computer without interfering the operation of a keyboard. A calculator of the present invention is directly connected to a computer by a cable (connected to the keyboard receptacle). The keyboard which is originally connected to the computer is shifted to connect to the calculator. Through the control of a selector switch on the calculator, the computer can be alternatively connected with the calculator or the keyboard for on-line operation without interference with the operation of any computer software program or the function of the calculator.
The present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the annexed drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 illustrates a computer operated through keyboard input control;
Fig. 2 illustrates an application of the present invention connected between a keyboard and a computer for on-line operation;
Fig. 3 is a schematic drawing illustrating the control circuit of the present invention.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, a calculator 1 (either regular or scientific model or with printer equipped) comprises a special IC 11 controlled by a selector key 12 to convert its provided signal into computer code for sending to a computer 2 through a cable 13. When in use, a calculator 1 of the present invention is connected in series between a keyboard 3 and a computer 2. Through the control of the selector key 12, the calculator 1 can be connected for on-line operation with the computer 2 or switched off permitting the keyboard 3 to directly connect to the computer 2 for on-line operation.
Claims (3)
1. A calculator connected in series between a computer and a keyboard by a cable, comprising a special
IC controlled by a selector key for converting its signal into computer code for on-line operation with said computer, wherein said keyboard can be alternatively connected to said computer for on-line operation by means of the control of said selector key.
2. A calculator for connection in series between a computer and a keyboard, the calculator comprising a selection key and a special IC controlled by the selector key for converting its signal into computer code for on-line operation with said computer, wherein a keyboard and a computer connected to the calculator can alternatively be connected together for on-line operation by means of the control of said selector key.
3. A calculator, substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, Figure 2 or 3 of the accompanying drawings.
