Abstract

A composite neck construction for a guitar is made from a fiber reinforced plastic shell 10 and a foam core 20. This neck construction is moisture-resistant and therefore does not deform easily. The fabrication of this neck is simple. <IMAGE>

Description

1 NECK CONSTRUCTION FOR GUITAR environment This invention relates to a
guitar and Particularly to the neck of a guitar formed by a reinforced plastic shell and a foam core.
Most of conventional guitars are fabricated entirely or in part from wood. Wooden guitars are liable to warp in a less than completely dry This problem adversely affects the quality of the sound produced degrading the guitar within a short period. Another problem is the poor durability of a wooden guitar which arises from the poor strength of wocJ. An improvement was made by fabricating a hollow wooden piece to enclose a metal core. However, the construction is heavy and requires a complicated process.
Figi-re 1 shows a guitar neck construction which comprises a fiber reinforced plastic shell and a wooden core. This construction has improved strength and is moisture-resistant. However, the need to machine the wooden core is inconvenient.
An object of the invention is to provide a guitar with a neck of improved construction which is of light weight, moisture-resistant and can be fabricated easily.
2 According to the present invention, the net construction of a guitar includes: an elongated body defining a finger board, a plurality of frets across the finger board, a plurality of tuning pegs mounted on the elongated body, a plurality of strings respectively connected to the tuning pegs and held tough above the frets; and improvements wherein the elongated body is made from a fiber reinforced plastic shell and a foam core.
The exemplary preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described in detailed with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the neck of a known guitar; Figure 2 is a perspective view of a neck of a guitar according to the present invention; Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Figure 2; and Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring to Figures 2 to 4, a neck for a guitar constructed according to the present invention includes an elongated body which comprises a fiber reinforced plastic shell 10 enclosing a foamed core 20. The shell 10 has an oblong cross-section. The upper side of the c 1 i I i i i 1 i i i 3 shell 10 defines a finger board on which are provided a plurality of spaced frets 11 with string grooves 111 and a bridge 12 with grooves 121. String supports 13 are mounted at one enc portion of the elongated body and tuning pegs 15 are connected to the string supports 13. Strings 14 are fastened to the string supports 13 and drawn tough over the finger board, the other ends of the strings being attached to a guitar body (not shown) which is connected to the neck.
The shell may be a plastic reinforced with carbon fibers or glass fibers. The foamed core may be an ethyl vinyl acetate foam or an other suitable foam. The fabrication of this composite construction is simple and known, and is accomplished by first forming the tubular shell and then forming in-situ the foamed core in the tubular shell. The product formed has a weight lighter than that of the neck construction shown in Figure 1 and is more durable.
With the invention thus explained, it is apparent 20 that numerous modifications and variations can be made without departing from the scope of the invention. It is therefore intended that the invention be limited only as indicated in the appended claims.
