Abstract

224,690. Western Electric Co., Ltd., (Deakin, G., Schreiber, L. J. J., and Pappi, J. R.). Oct. 19, 1923. Impuclse transmitters for selecting one of a number of intercommunicating stations as described in Specification 117,170 are provided with means for varying the number of trains of impulses to be sent and the number of impulses in each train. The code to be sent is determined by handles 34, 35, 46 which control the positions of segments 24, 25, 32, loosely mounted on a main shaft 15. To initiate the transmission of impulses a key 26 is given a. quarter turn to wind up a spring 27 and is then released. The main shaft 15 then makes a single revolution under control of a governor 29, the rotation being limited by a detent 52. At the first movement of the shaft, a cam 31 allows the normally separated springs 17, 18, 28 to come into engagement. Thereafter the springs are controlled by an impulse wheel 14 secured to a ratchet-wheel 19, both being loosely mounted on the main shaft. The impulse wheel, by means of a spring 22 on spring 17 causes springs 17, 18 to make and break, and at make, spring 18 is forced away from spring 28. The rotation of the impulse wheel is steadied by a spring 56. The ratchet-wheel is driven by an arm 21 of the main shaft and a pawl 20 pivoted on the arm. At a point dependent on the setting, an arm 23 on the pawl 20 comes up against one of the segments 24, 25. The pawl 20 is thus disengaged and the impulse wheel stops. When the arm 23 passes off the segment the impulse wheel is again driven until the second of the segments 24, 25 is encountered. A third train is sent in a similar way, but the third segment 32 is so arranged that whenever it is set, the arm 23 on leaving it comes against a fourth, fixed segment 48 so that the pawl 20 remains disengaged. At the end of the. revolution, the cam 31 once more causes all the springs to separate. The Provisional Specification describes in some detail the control by the impulse transmitter of the selector described in Specification 117,170.
