Abstract
A pipe closing device comprising a housing 19 which fits around a selected pipe 14. To close the pipe 14 a bullet is fired at the firing pin 16, being helped to home onto the target by the funnel 17. Upon detonation the explosion forces the ram 11 against the pipe 14 and towards the former 8. When the pipe 14 is closed the ram 11 is locked by two spring loaded pins 12 seating into the groove in the ram. <IMAGE>
Description
PIPE CLOSING DEVICE
This invention relates to a pipe closing device.
Normal practice for emergency stopping of a flow in a pipe is to fit valves which are operated manually or by signal and then hydraulically, pneumatically, electrically, mechanically or other means.
Occasions arise when none of these methods are possible, for example when an offshore oil or gas installation has to be abandoned because of fire. The present invention would then come into use to shut off the oil or gas supply to the rig.
The pipe closing device would be fitted on the selected pipe on a permanent basis in case of emergency.
It would then require someone to shoot a bullet into the funnel to activate the device and close the pipe.
According to the present invention there is provided a pipe closing device comprising a housing which contains at the firing end a spring loaded firing pin, which acts on a detonator in the chamber which contains an explosive charge.
Upon detonation the explosion forces a ram, fitted at the front end with a former, against the selected pipe pushing it against the second former and thus closing the pipe diametrically. At the end of the ram stroke two spring loaded pins seat into a machined groove in the ram, thus locking the ram against the pipe.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
FIGURE 1 - Shows a front elevation of the pipe closing device with
the funnel not shown attached.
FIGURE 2 - Shows a sectioned side elevation of the pipe closing
device with the funnel in position.
FIGURE 3 - Shows a sectional plan view of the pipe closing device
with the ram set for firing.
FIGURE 4 - Shows a sectional plan view of the pipe closing device
after firing.
FIGURE 5 - Shows an isometric view of the pipe closing device to
pictorally show how it fits on the selected pipe.
Referring to the drawings, the pipe closing device comprises a housing 19 which is designed with guides 7 to centralize the selected pipe 14.
The housing 19 is placed around the selected pipe .14 and the former 8 is slid into position and locked with the nut 9.
The whole pipe closing device would sit on a pipe clamp on the selected pipe 14.
When required to be activated a bullet is fired into the funnel 17 and is diverted onto the firing pin 16 which strikes the detonator 15.
The resulting explosion of the charge 20 forces the ram 11 into the pipe 14 and toward the former 8.
When the pipe 14 is closed, the ram 11 is in a position to allow two spring loaded pins 12 to seat into the groove in the ram 11, effectively locking the ram 11 on a closed pipe 14.
Claims (6)
1. A pipe closing device comrising two opposed formers which are
assembled around the selected pipe.
2. A pipe closing device as claimed in claim 1, wherein formers are
forced together to squeeze the wall of the pipe diametrically
closed.
3. A pipe closing device as claimed in any preceding claim wherein
a ram is forced by explosive power against the selected pipe with
sufficient force to crush the pipe diametrically, thus sealing
the pipe.
4. A pipe closing device as claimed in any preceding claim wherein
the locking of the ram is achieved by means of spring loaded pins
which seat into a groove in the ram.
5. A pipe closing device as claimed in any preceding claim wherein
a fabricated funnel is fitted to facilate the detonation of the
explosive by diverting the bullet onto the firing pin.
6. A pipe closing device substantially, as described herein with
reference to figures 1-5 of the accompanying drawings.
