Abstract

A programmable tone generator (7) for a vehicle intruder or disturbance alarm system which emits or causes to be emitted (8) an unusual audible alarm signal which can be or has been programmed to be identifiable by any person or persons responsible for the vehicle in which the alarm system is fitted. The unusual audible alarm signal could be programmed by the user, installer, supplier, distributor or manufacturer of the alarm system or programmable tone generator prior to being armed (2). The alarm signal may, for example, comprise an interrupted tone warning signal formed by a morse code letter or group of letters. <IMAGE>

Description

Programmable Tone Generator for Vehicle Alarm This invention relates to a programmable alarm tone generator for use with vehicle alarm systems.
Vehicle intruder and disturbance alarms are well known systems which give an audible indication when the protected vehicle is entered or moved. The audible indication of the alarm condition is usually given by the vehicle horn or by some other audible device installed as part of the alarm system.
A weakness of current vehicle alarm systems, however, is that they are often ignored, even by the individual responsible for the vehicle. The advantage of this invention is that it particularly draws the attention of the vehicle owner or keeper to the alarm condition and that person is more likely to react promptly to investigate the cause.
The invention provides a method of varying or interrupting the alarm signal in accordance with an unusual pattern. This pattern to be pre-defined by the user, installer, supplier, distributor or manufacturer of the alarm system or other person so that the alarm can be recognised as belonging to a specific vehicle or group of vehicles.
The vehicle alarm system may be armed and subsequently triggered by any satisfactory method. The alarm system will then emit or cause to be emitted an unusual varying or interrupted tone or signal such that it is likely to be recognised by whoever is responsible for the vehicle in addition to attracting the attention of any other party within earshot of the alarm system.
The cadence or pattern of variation or interruption of the alarm signal will be determined before the alarm is armed. The person responsible for the vehicle can then react specifically to that particular alarm signal and not to every occurence of a similar alarm system.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Figure I shows diagrammatically a typical vehicle alarm system including a programmable tone or pattern generation unit.
The main alarm control system 1, when armed, reacts to the sensors and generates an alarm condition when one or more of the sensors is disturbed or activated. The arming circuit 2 may be operated by means of a switch or a remote control unit and puts the alarm system into its active state after a delay to allow exit from the vehicle or for the circuits to stabilise before the detection system is operative.
The sensors 3,4,5 and 6 may include units such as an ultrasonic detector, door switches, a shock detector and a voltage monitor and are used to monitor the status of the vehicle. Any of these sensors can initiate an alarm condition when the system is armed.
The alarm condition will trigger the pattern generator unit 7 into operation.
This in turn will drive the audible indicator 8 which typically could be a vehicle horn or a Piezo reflex horn. The pattern or varying tone would most likely be of a few seconds duration in order to be easily remembered. This pattern could also be repeated for a period of 30 seconds to 3 minutes to give enough time for the alarm to be recognised and reacted to.
The pattern generator in the above example could be programmed by a variety of methods which could typically include switches to select presence or absence of tone, or an electronic method such as a programmable read only memory integrated circuit. An interrupted tone warning signal may comprise a morse code letter or group of letters and a continuous tone could be modulated by changing the amplitude or frequency according to such a pattern.
