Abstract

224,591. Bath, H. H. Aug. 13, 1923. Drip-feed apparatus; distributing liquid over solid; separating residue from unused solid in generators.-Water delivered by the usual water-control valve 9 is delivered to a wick 11 adapted to be spread out so as to cover a considerable area of the carbide, thereby ensuring an even generation of gas even whilst the carbide is being shaken. The carbide is contained in a holder 1 having a bottom dished towards the centre and at this point finely perforated; the holder is mounted on a spring 8 and is provided with a cover 3 having a central opening which when the holder is in position is closed by a hood 5 carried on the cylindrical body of the water-valve 9 and pressed downwards by a spring 6. In use, the lims separated from the carbide, is shaken through the perforations at the base of the holder, and the cover serves to prevent the escape of dust. The wick 11 is carried by a holder 12, 13 which is screwed to the lower end of the valve body, and the part 13 of the holder is arranged to hold the wick tightly against the valve; a helical spring 14 surrounds the part of the wick immediately below the holder. The wick may be supported independently of and below the valve, and it may be carried by the cover of the carbide holder. When applied to generators having a central screw for connecting the water and generating chambers, the water valve would be placed eccentrically.
