Abstract

It is known to make endless nylon ribbons for use, e.g. in computer printers by joining the two ends of a length of ribbon by means of ultrasonic welding. However, the quality of print in the vicinity of such joints deteriorates with use. In the method of the invention, an endless, seamless ribbon is prepared by cutting from a sheet of ribbon material having a thickness equal to the desired thickness of the ribbon a number of endless, seamless ribbons. The ribbons may be produced by rotating a turntable supporting a circular sheet below radially equi-shaped heated knives 3. Ribbons thereby produced have the advantage of seamless ribbons in terms of print quality, but are comparatively cheap to manufacture. <IMAGE>

Description

A Method of and Apparatus for Making Endless Ribbon The present invention relates to endless ribbons, especially for use in computers, computer printers, typewriters and other office machines.
Endless nylon ribbons are known which are made from a length of ribbon the two ends of which are joined together by ultrasonic welding. Endless ribbons which include a joint or seam suffer frorn the dlsadvantssge that after prolonged use of the ribbon in a printer the quality of print from the region of the joint or seam becomes different to that from the remainder of the ribbon, and after further use the joint or seam may bresk.
Endless nylon ribbons are also known which do not have any seam or joint. These seamless ribbons are produced using special purpose looms. These seamless ribbons do not suffer from the disadvantages of variable print quality or breakage at the seam, but are expensive to manufacture because of the need for special purpose equipment.
The aim of the present invention is to provide t method of manufacturing seamless ribbon which method does not require the use of expensive equipment.
The invention provides a method of manufacturing an endless seamless ribbon comprising preparing a sheet of ribbon material with a thickness equal to the desired thickness of the ribbon, and then cutting the sheet into a number of endless seamless ribbons.
Prefertably, the sheet of ribbon material is circular in shape and is cut by means of concentric cute into a series of circular ribbons.
Preferrably, the cutting is effected by mounting the device on a turn table and rotating the turn table past an array of radially equally spaced cutting devices.
The invention also provides apparatus for use in carrying out the method, comprising a turn table on which a disc of ribbon material may be mounted and rotated, and a series of radially equally spaced cutting devices for cutting the disc of material when the turn table is rotated.
The invention will now be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, one preferred construction of apparatus for use in carrying out the method. In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the apparatus; and Figure 2 is an elevation of the apparatus.
The apparatus comprises a base 1, a turn table 2 mounted on the base, and a series of hot knives 3 mounted on a heating element 4 in the form of a boom which extends along a radius of the turn table, Zn operation, a disc of ribbon material (not shown) having a thickness equal to that desired in the finished ribbon is mounted on the turn table 2. The heating element 4 is switched on and when the knives 3 have reached the desired temperature the turn table is rotated and the result is a large number of endless concentric seamless ribbons.
