Abstract
A telescopic adjustable capacity carrying case for skis, skipoles, fishing rods, golf clubs, theodolites, comprises an inner sleeve 2 sliding in an outer sleeve 1, a shoulder strap 9, a rigid carrying handle 6 and an end handle 17. The inner sleeve 2 has a holed (7) ridge 4 which is accommodated in a channel 5 an the outer sleeve 1. A notch 8 is cut in the channel 5 so that a padlock 3 may be reeved through any one of the holes 7 in the ridge 4 to lock the inner sleeve 2 to the outer sleeve 1 at the preferred length. Locating buttons 18 an inner faces of the channel 5 register with the holes 7. <IMAGE>
Description
LOCKABLE TELESCOPIC CARRYING CASE
This invention relates to a lockable telescopic carrying case.
Telescopic carrying cases consist of two sleeves, one of which slides within the other. The case provides protection during storage, handling, and transprtation of elongated sparing and professional equipment, such as skis, fishing rods, golf clubs or theodolites. The telescopic nature of the case ensures that elongated articles of various lengths may be acocnmodated in one standard case which is readily adjusted to the overall length of the particular articles.
A problem with existing telesscpic case designs is that of providing a means by which the case may be secured at a preferred length and locked at that length so that the case may not be opened by unautborised persons when left unattended or during shipment as baggage.
Existing telescopic cases display a variety of means of securing the case once it is adjusted to the desired length. Some of the securing nEchanisms, such as those involving variable length straps, and those which clasp the inner sleeve within the outer, prevent the case fran opening accidentally, but do not provide a deterrent to unauthorised persons.
Other variable length cases provide access via removable and lockable end caps, and sate exhibit removable and lockable sections in their length, but do not afford the fine degree of adjustment in the overall length of the case as is exhibited by the sadly non-lockable telesocpic cases.
According to the present invention the inner sleeve is fashioned with a longitudinal ridge or fin which is punctured with a series of holes along its length.
The outer sleeve is fashioned with a longitudinal gully or channel. As the inner sleeve is inserted into the outer sleeve so the ridge enters the channel.
A notch is cut out of the channel on outer sleeve through which one of the many holes in the ridge on the inner sleeve may be observed. When the telescopic case has been adjusted to the desired length, the two sleeves may be secured and locked to each other by reeving a padlodk though whichever of the ridge boles appear in the channel notch.
This method of securing the inner sleeve to the outer sleeve affords the two benefits not found together in any one of the existing cases.
Firstly, it allows the desired fine graduaticns in the overall secured length of the carrying case and secondly, it allows the case to be locked at that length so that the case may not be opened by unautnorised persons when left unattended or during shipment as baggage.
To assist in positioning one of the many holes in the ridge on the inner sleeve in the centre of the notch in the chaNnel on the outer sleeve, a pair of locating buttons are positioned one on eadh of the internal faces of the channel.
The preferred specific entodiment of the invention will noa be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in w.hich:- Fig 1. shows the complete assembled telescopic carrying case.
Fig 2. shows the outer sleeve with channel, notch and carrying handle.
Fig 3. shows the ridged inner sleeve with skis and poles.
Fig 4. shows an enlargement of the locking and securing rexhez m between the inner and otter sleeves.
Referring to the drawings it can be seen that the inner sleeve 2 will slide within the outer sleeve 1 and that the holed ridge 4 is acssarDdated within the channel 5.
The inner sleeve 2 is located relative to the outer sleeve 1 by a pair of snail buttons 18, one on either side of the inner faces of the channel 5. The buttons register on the holes 7 in the ridge 4 so that the inner sleeve 2 will tend to come to rest within the outer sleeve 1 with one of the many holes 7 in the ridge 4 positioned exactly in the centre of the notch 8 which is cut out of the channel 5.
In this way the buttons 18 assist the user in finding a hole 7 in the ridge 4 within the notch 8 in the channel 5 through which he or she mly reeve a padlock 3 to secure the inner sleeve 2 to the outer sleeve 1 and so lock the two sleeves together so that the case may not be opened by unauthorised persons when left unattended or during shipnent as baggage.
The notch 8 could equally well be replaced with a hole in the channel 5.
A handle 6 is pravided on the end of the inner sleeve 2 to assist in pushing and pulling the inner sleeve into and out of the outer sleeve 1.
A rubber grip 17 is secured to the base of the handle 6 by stretching it between two hooks 19. This allows the case to be leant casually against a brill. The rubber grip prevents the base skidding autwards and the case falling over.
A shoulder strap 15 is attached to the outer sleeve 2 by means of a trigger hszk 12 which is passed through an eye in lug 10 and likewise by a further trigger hock 13 which is passed through an eye in a further lug 11. The strap 15 is adjustable for length by moving the slide 14 and is prevented fran sliding fran the carriers shoulder by pad 9.
A very long rigid handle 16 runs from a first position adjacent the mouth of the outer sleeve 1 to a second position mstre than half way down the outer sleeve 1.
The handle 16 is unusually long so that it bridges all possible balance points for the telescopic case. With the inner sleeve 2 wholly inserted into the outer sleeve 1 to give a short case, the case will balance at a position on the handle 16 close to the lug 10 nor the centre of the outer sleeve 1.
With the inner sleeve 2 fully extended fran the outer sleeve 1 to give a long case, the case will balance at a position on the handle 16 close to the lug 11 near the open youth of the outer sleeve 1.
Claims (5)
1. A telescopic carrying case comprising two sleeves, a rigid
carrying handle, end paddle and a shoulder strap, with a ridge on
the inner sleeve and an accommodating channel on the outer
sleeve.
2. A telescopic carrying case as claimed in claim 1 wherein a notch
or hole is positioned in the channel on the outer sleeve so as to expose one of a. rnmt of holes in the ridge on the inner sleeve
through which a padlock may be reeved to lock the two sleeves
together.
3. A telescopic carrying case as claimed in claim 1 wherein a pair
of locating buttons are positioned on each of the internal faces
of .the channel on the outer sleeve so as to register on the holes
in the ridge on the inner sleeve and cause one of the boles to
align with the notch in the channel.
4. A telescopic carrying case as claimed in claim 1 wherein a rubber
pad is secured to the base of the handle on the end of the telesoopic case.
5. A telescopic carrying case as claimed in claim 1 wherein the
rubber pad is secured to the base of the handle on the end of the
telescopic case by stretching it between two hooks formed on the
handle.
