Abstract

The assembly comprises a linearly movable rack (11) connected to a brake-cable (14), a rotatably mounted actuating lever (20) and a link (25) pivotally mounted between the lever and the rack for moving the rack to tension the cable. A pawl (30) engages the rack to hold the brake on, but the lever can be returned to a parked position by means of an arcuate guide slot (27) engaging the lever. A similar slot (33) in the pawl permits corresponding movement of a connecting rod (41), in the lever, relative to the pawl and prevents release of the brake when lever (20) is in the parked position. When the lever is in the raised position, button (40) may be depressed to release the pawl (30) via the connecting rod (41). <IMAGE>

Description

VEHICLE HAND-BRAKE ASSEMBLY This invention relates to a vehicle hand-brake assembly.
Hand-brake assemblies commonly comprise a hand-actuable lever pivotally mounted on a support and having a brake-cable attached to the lever at a position spaced from the lever pivot, so that angular movement of the lever varies the tension in the cable. The support mounts an arcuate rack and the lever pivotally carries a pawl, spring-urged to engage the rack, for holding the lever in a selected angular position. A button in the lever is connected to the pawl and can be actuated to release the pawl, to permit movement of the lever from an operating position to a parked position. The position of the lever relative to the support determines the tension in the cable and tension is released, when the lever is in the parked position.
There are advantages in providing for linear movement of the member attached to the brake-cable. This puts less strain on the brake-cable and may permit greater movement of the brakecable for a given angular movement of the hand-actuable lever.
EP-A-0250185 discloses an arrangement in which the brakecable is connected to a rack, mounted on the support for linear movement. The pawl is mounted on the support, but still connected to the release button on the lever. An additional
drive pawl is mounted on the lever. In operation, angular movement of the lever from the parked position moves the drive pawl to drive the rack relative to the support to tension the brake-cable. On release of the lever, the drive pawl can slide over the rack to return the lever to the parked position. The rack is held in position by the first pawl to maintain tension in the brake-cable and actuation of the button releases the first pawl from the rack to release tension in the brake-cable.
With this arrangement, the lever can be returned to the parked position when the brake of a vehicle is applied irrespective of the amount of movement necessary to apply the brake, which increases with wear.
This arrangement has the disadvantage that it involves two pawls in order to actuate and maintain tension in the brake cable.
The present invention provides a hand-brake assembly which is simpler in construction than the assembly of EP-A-0250185, in that it involves one pawl and thus takes less room for installation.
The present invention provides a hand-brake assembly comprising a support, a rack mounted on the support for linear movement, the rack having a row of teeth and means for connection to a brake-cable, a hand-actuable lever pivotally mounted on the support for angular movement from a parked position, force-transmission means between the rack and the lever whereby the lever can be moved to effect linear adjustment of the position of the rack to tension a brake-cable connected thereto, a pawl engaging the teeth of the rack to maintain the adjusted position of the rack, the lever being movable relative to the pawl back to the parked position, and means for releasing the pawl from the teeth of the rack, CHARACTERISED in that the force-transmission means comprises a link extending between the rack and the lever and pivotally mounted on the rack and the lever, the lever having an arcuate guide concentric with the pivot and receiving the link to permit movement of the lever relative to the link for return of the lever to the parked position.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawing, wherein the sole figure is a diagrammatic side elevation of a hand-brake assembly according to the invention.
The hand-brake assembly shown comprises a support (not shown) which slidably mounts an elongate rack 11 for longitudinal, linear movement relative to the support. The rack has teeth 12, along at least part of its length, and has an apertured end part 13 for mounting a brake-cable 14.
A hand-actuable lever 20 has a plate portion 21, at one end, and a hollow, cylindrical elongate portion 22 at the opposite end. The plate portion 21 is pivotally mounted on the support about a pivot pin 23. A pair of parallel links 25 extends between the rack and the plate portion and is pivotally mounted at a fixed position on the rack by a pivot pin 26. The plate portion has an arcuate slot 27 concentric with the pivot pin 23 mounting the lever on the support. The links 25 carry a pivot pin 28 which pivotally engages in the slot and is movable along the slot, so that the slot defines a guide for the links.
In use, lifting of the lever 22, from the parked position shown in the Figure, causes rotation of the plate about its pivotal connection 23 to the support. The links engage one end 29 of the slot 27, so that such rotation moves the links and causes linear movement of the rack 11 in the cable tensioning direction.
A pawl 30 is provided to prevent return of the rack and hold the cable 14 in tension. The pawl is rotatably mounted on the pivot pin 23 which mounts the lever on the support, and has a tooth 31 urged into engagement with the teeth 12 of the rack by a torsion spring 32.
A button 40 is mounted in the free end of the hollow, cylindrical, elongate portion 22 of the lever and a connecting rod 41 extends between the button and the pawl 30. The button is urged to a static position by a spring 42, in which position the pawl engages with the rack. The button may be depressed against the spring bias to cause rotation of the pawl out of engagement with the rack, to permit return of the rack and release of tension on the brake cable.
The connecting rod 41 has a cranked end portion (not shown) which engages in an arcuate slot 33 in the pawl, the slot being concentric with the pivot pin 23 of the pawl and lever.
The arrangement is such that the button cannot be depressed to release the pawl in the parked position of the lever, such action tending to urge the pawl towards engagement with the rack. When the lever is raised, however, the connecting rod 41 is moved along the slot 33 in the pawl to a position in which the pawl can be released. This arrangement prevents sudden release of the brake and provides a smooth operation.
The lever returns to the parked position, when released, whatever the position of the rack and, therefore, irrespective of whether or not the brake is applied. This return movement is provided for by the arcuate slot 27 in the plate portion of the lever, which permits the plate portion to move relative to the links by sliding of the links pivot pin 28 in the slot.
In order to release the brake, it is necessary to lift the lever, so that the connecting rod is moved to a position in which the pawl can be released. The rack then returns and the link slides back down the slot 27 in the plate portion towards the end 29 of the slot.
