Description
PLASTICS TIE
This invention relates to a one-piece tie of plastics material, particularly for security uses.
It is known to use one-piece plastics ties in banking for tying the necks of cash bags when filled with money. Such ties comprise an elongate serrated strap having an apertured head at one end: in use, the strap is looped around the neck of the bag, inserted through the apertured head and pulled tight. The serrations on the strap interlock with a pawl element in the head aperture to prevent loosening.
In known uses of ties for securing cash bags, it is common to thread the strap through an identification label before looping the strap around the bag and passing it through the head aperture. There is often a desire, however, to be able to tie the bag first and then apply the identification label afterwards. Further in known security ties, the length of strap passed through the head is left projecting can cause injury to people handling the cash bags.
In accordance with this invention there is provided a one-piece tie of plastics material, comprising an elongate strap provided with a series of serrations on one side thereof and with an apertured head at one end thereof, a pawl disposed within the head aperture and arranged to engage the strap serrations when the strap is formed into a loop and passed through the head aperture, an apertured projection is formed on an outer end of the head, and a pair of stop elements are formed on the strap for engaging said projection when the strap is further formed into a secondary loop and passed through the apertured projection.
In use of this tie, after it has been tightened around the cash bag, the projecting end of the strap may be threaded through an identification label, then formed into a secondary loop and passed through the apertured projection to come to a stop by the stop elements locating with the projection around its aperture. In this way, the secondary loop provides the facility for applying the identification label after the cash bag has been tied, and furthermore only a relatively short length of strap is left projecting.
An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a longitudinal section through a one-piece security tie showing details of the head and of different elements along the length of the strap of the tie;
FIGURE 2 is a cross-section on the line II - II of
Figure 1;
FIGURE 3 is a side view of the tie in its tied condition;
FIGURE 4 is a longitudinal section through the head when the tie is in its tied condition; and
FIGURE 5 is a cross-section through an end portion of the strap showing a modification applicable to the tie.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a tone-piece security tie moulded from plastics material.
The tie comprises a flat elongate strap 10 provided with a series of transverse ratchet serrations 12 on one side and with a head 14 at one end, the head projecting from the opposite side of the strap. Each serration on the strap has a stop surface 12a perpendicular to the plane of the strap and an inclined camming surface 12b, these two surfaces being joined by a curved tooth crest 12c. A short flat portion 12d of the strap separates the camming surface 12b of each serration from the stop surface 12a of the next serration in the series.
The series of serrations 12 terminates some distance from the free end of the strap, providing a length of strap which is plain apart from the provision of two stop elements 13, 15 on the same side of the strap as the serrations 12.
The stop elements comprise transverse serrations with stop surfaces 13a, 15a and inclined camming surfaces 13b, 15b.
The tooth crests are curved as at 13c, 15c. The stop surfaces 13a, 15a face each other, are spaced apart by a short flat portion of the strap 13d and slightly diverge from each other as shown in Figure 1. The stop element or serration 15 nearer the free end of the strap projects a lesser distance from the surface of the strap than serration 13.
The head 14 comprises an inner end wall 16 and an outer end wall 18 and a pair of opposite side walls 20, 22, defining a passage 24 extending through the head from an insertion opening 26 to an outlet 28. The width of this passage, between the opposite side walls 20, 22, is only slightly wider than the width of the strap 10 which is to be passed through the head aperture from the insertion opening 26 to the outlet 28. Adjacent the insertion opening, the inner end wall 16 of the head exhibits a thickened porttion 16a having a surface 16b facing the outlet 28. A pawl 30 has one end pivotally joined to this surface 16b at its front edge, the pawl projecting towards the outlet 28 but terminating a distance from the outlet itself.The pawl extends at an inclination towards the outer end wall 18 of the head, has a flat front surface 31 and a flat rearwardly inclined top surface 32 joined by an angled tip surface 33, and a rear surface 34 which is convex curved over its middle region. The front surface 31 of the pawl merges with a flat surface 16c of the thickened portion of the inner end wall 16, which surface 16c extends perpendicular to the plane of the strap. The pawl has its side edges joined to the opposite side walls 20, 22 of the head by flexible webs 35, 36 which extend the full length of the pawl but taper towards its free end as shown in Figure 1, the front surfaces of the webs lying in the same plane as the surface 16e of the head inner wall. The outer end wall 18 of the head provides an abutment surface for the plain side of the strap to be pressed against by the pawl.This abutment surface comprises a first portion 18a which is parallel to the surface 16c and extends to part way along the pawl, and then a second portion 18b which curves towards the pawl and terminates beyond the tip of the pawl. This defines a profile for the head aperture which commences along a straight line perpendicular to the strap, then curves towards and partially over the tip of the pawl.
A flat projection 40 is provided from the outer end wall 18 of the head, in the same plane as the strap.
This projection may carry identifying indicia and is joined to the outer end wall 18 by a pair of triangular fillets 41, between which a rectangular aperture 42 is provided.
This aperture 42 is immediately adjacent the outer surface of the outer end wall 18 and its opposite edge is thickened to provide an inclined stop surface 43.
Referring to Figure 3, in use of the tie, the strap 10 is formed into the first loop L1 around the neck of a cash bag and passed though the head aperture 24 from the insertion opening 26 to the outlet 28. This places the strap 10 with its serrations 12 facing inwardly of the loop and against the neck of the cash bag (not shown). The strap 10 is pulled tight about the neck of the cash bag and, as the strap is pulled through the head, the camming surfaces 12b of the successive strap serrations slide on surface 31 of the pawl 30, causing the pawl to be pivoted back to allow each serration to pass. The flexible webs 35, 36 do not significantly restrain this movement of the pawl and it is found that the strap can be pulled through the head quite easily by hand.
Once the strap 10 has been tightened about the cash bag, the projecting length of strap can be threaded through an identification label (not shown), then formed into a secondary loop L2 and passed through the aperture 42 in the projection 40. The strap will locate in position once the first stop element 15 of the strap has passed through the aperture 42 and for the second stop element 13 to abut the material adjacent the aperture 42. The first stop element 15 passes quite readily through aperture 42 but the second stop element 13 comes to rest, because its crest is higher than that of stop element 15. It will be noted from Figures 3 and 4 that, when formed into its secondary loop, the strap naturally adopts an inclined position relative to the projection 40, and the inclined surface 43 of the latter is at such an angle as to mate with the stop surface 13a of the stop element 13.
Figure 4 shows that the strap 10 follows a path through the head 14 which commences perpendicular to the projection 40, then curves partially over the tip of the pawl 30 to obstruct the insertion of any implement for levering the pawl back to loosen the strap. Further, the tip of the pawl interlocks with a serration 12, the surfaces 12a, 12b and 12d of the serration mating with the surfaces 32, 30 and 33 of the pawl.
As previously described, the flexible webs 35, 36 do not significantly impede pivoting movement of the pawl when inserting the strap through the head, but do serve to impart sufficient restraint on the pawl to make it diffi cult to lever this back should someone succeed in inserting a pointed tool through the head openings 26,28. If increasing force is applied to the strap to try and withdraw it from the head, the strap will pull the pawl forwardly until the flexible webs shear. If excessive force is applied to the strap, then the strap itself will shear rather than the pawl being sheared from the head.
Referring to Figure 5, the strap may be formed at or adjacent its free end with a longitudinal rib 11 on its plain side, offset towards one edge of the strap. The surfaces 18a, 18b of the outer end wall of the tie head are then formed with a complementary groove. The purpose of this is to ensure that the free end of the strap can only be inserted into the head in the correct manner, i.e. into the head through opening 26 and with the serrations facing the pawl.
