Abstract
A security clamp (10) particularly for fire arms comprises a base portion (12) having a peg (24) and a housing portion (16) having a lock (38). The housing portion (16) is engageable with the base portion by means of lips (36) engaging with slots (22) in the base portion. The lock (38) has a bar (46) which engages with a through opening (30) in the peg (24). In use a fire arm is located in the security clamp with the peg (24) passing through the trigger guard of the fire arm. The housing portion (14) is engaged with the base portion (12) and the lock is operated so that the locking bar (46) passes through the opening (30) in the peg (24). <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO SECURITY CLAMPS
This invention relates to security clamps, in particular to security clamps for the secure storage of fire arms and shot guns.
A requirement for a fire arms certificate holder or a shotgun permit holder is that the fire arm or shotgun shall be stored securely so as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, access to the fire arm or shotgun by unauthorised persons.
A number of lockable cabinets which provides sufficient security are available, but such cabinets tend to be relatively expensive and do not provide security for fire arms during transit. Also if guns are to be kept at more than one location, more than one cabinet would be required.
Other safe storage devices are also available, but in general access to the locking arrangements can be made enabling the locks to be released using, for example, a hacksaw.
The present invention seeks to provide a security clamp particularly for fire arm and shotguns in which access to the locking arrangement is relatively difficult and which provides a security clamp which is adaptable so that at least a part of the clamp can be used in a number of locations.
Accordingly the present invention provides a security clamp comprising a base portion and a housing portion, the base and the housing portion including engagement means enabling the base and housing portions to be releasably secured together, the clamp including a peg attached to one of said portions and a locking means secured to the other one of said portions, the locking means being releasably engagable with the peg.
The security clamp can be arranged so that the peg is attached to the base portion and the locking means is attached to the housing portion.
The base portion can be provided with a plurality of holes enabling the base portion to be secured to a support structure such as a wall or a car boot floor.
The peg can be provided with a through opening and the locking means can include a bar engagable with the through opening in the peg.
The peg can be releasably secured to the base plate enabling the peg and the housing portion to be used in conjunction with different base portions permanently secured in a number of locations.
The security clamp engagement means can comprise a pair of lips on the housing portion engagable with respective slots at the edge of the base portion.
The base portion and the housing portion can be parallel sided or tapered.
One end of the housing portion can be partially closed off by a plate in order to further restrict access to the locking means.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
Fig. 1 shows a plan view of one form of security clamp according to the present invention,
Fig. 2 is a section on line II-II in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base portion of the security clamp shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
Fig. 4 is a section on line IV-IV in Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a part view on arrow A in Fig. 4,
Fig. 6 is a scrap view of the locking means of the security clamp shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and
Fig. 7 is a section on line VII-VII in Fig. 6.
Referrring to the drawings a security clamp 10 particularly for securing fire arms and shotguns, comprises a base portion 12 and a housing portion 14. The base portion 12 comprises a base plate 16, a spacer plate 18 and a top plate 20, the plates 16, 18 and 20 being welded together and defining a slot 22 along each side of the base portion. The top plate 20 can be cut back at 20A to ease fitting of the housing portion on the base portion, as described below.
A peg 24 preferably of hardened steel having a threaded length 26 is screwed into a threaded hole 28 which extends through the plates, 18, 20 and 22.
The housing portion 14 has a top 32, sides 34 and lips 36 which engage with respective ones of the slots 22. The housing portion 14 is generally rectangular in section but is tapered in plan and base portion 12 is correspondingly tapered as will be seen particularly in Figs. 1 and 3.
A lock 38 is welded to a plate 40 which itself is welded to the undersurface of the top 32 of the housing portion 14. A circular opening 42 is provided in the top 32 for access to the keyhole 44 of the lock 38. Preferably the lock 38 is of the "discus" type which includes an arcuate locking bar 46, and the key can only be removed from the lock when the lock is closed.
In order to use the security clamp as described above, the base portion 12 is attached to a firm structure such as a wall by means of non-return screws passing through holes 48 which extend through the base portion. A fire arm (not shown) which is to be secured in position is placed on the base portion so that the peg 24 passes through the trigger guard of the fire arm. The housing portion 14 is then attached to the base portion 12 by inserting the lips 36 at the wider end of the housing portion into the slots 22 at the narrower end of the base portion 12 and sliding the housing portion onto the base portion until the lock 38 is positioned relative to the peg 24 so that when the lock 38 is closed the locking bar 46 passes through the through opening 30 in the peg 24.The housing and base portions can be correctly located by providing a stop (not shown) either on the base portion or the housing portion to position the portions correctly with respect to one another.
It will be appreciated that when the components of the security clamp are assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, access to the lock, in particularly the locking bar of the lock, and the peg 24 is very restricted particularly if one or both ends of the security clamp are partially closed off. For example either the narrower or wider end of the housing can be partially closed off by a plate, e.g. plate 50 (Figs. 1 and 2). Similarly the base portion 12 can have a plate at either its upper or lower end which will partially close off either end of the housing portion.
If it is necessary for a fire arms owner to secure a fire arm in other locations, for example in a vehicle or in a club house, the same housing portion 14 and removable peg 24 can be used in combination with base portions secured, for example, to the floor of a car boot and to a suitable secure structure in a club house.
It will be appreciated that the security clamp constructed according to the present invention provides a relatively simple, secure and versatile means of securing a fire arm in a variety of locations.
While the security clamp according to the present invention has been described using a "discus" type lock any appropriate type of lock which provides engagement with the peg can be used. Also different types of engagement means between the two portions of the security clamp can be employed, for example a bayonet type fitting.
