Abstract

A flexible piping is of the type formed from an aluminium alloy strip, of which at least the face intended to form the interior wall of the pipe is coated with a layer of material which is insensitive to smoke, such as an epoxy-phenol. Each protective layer of material which is insensitive to humidity and smoke is covered with a second layer e.g. polyamide or polyurethane which is far more flexible, and has good qualities of adhesion to the first layer.

Description

FLEXIBLE PIPING FOR CHIMNEY PIPE The present invention concerns an improvement to flexible piping for chimney pipes for example of the type described in French Patent No. 2 601 112. Such piping is usually made from aluminium alloy strip or stainless steel strip.
The present invention aims to improve the durability of piping for chimney pipes so as to reduce their frequency of replacement and, consequently, to reduce the maintenance costs of chimneys equipped with such piping, even when they are used for highly corrosive smoke such as that emitted by condensation apparatuses.
To this end, at least the face intended to form the interior wall of the piping is coated with a layer of material which is insensitive to smoke, such as an epoxy-phenol. In such a pipe, the aluminium alloy strip serves as mechanical support located within the chimney and the layer of material which is insensitive to smoke has the effect of protecting the strip against corrosion, by preventing any contact between them and the smoke.
To manufacture this flexible piping for chimney pipes, a strip coated with epoxy-phenol is preformed and coiled helicoidally upon itself and finally joined by folded seam so as to bind its edges imperviously together and in succession to each other.
However, it has proved through usage to be the case that the brittle nature of the material forming the protective layer, particularly when it is formed from epoxy-phenol resin, caused cracks which destroyed the desired protective effect, such cracks arising either in the course of installation of the pipe or other handling, or else subsequently, particularly as a result of thermal shocks.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate this disadvantage.
According to the present invention there is provided flexible piping for chimney pipes formed from an aluminium alloy strip, which is capable of being helicoidally coiled upon itself so as to form piping by joining adjacent edges by folded seam joins in which at least the face intended to form the interior wall is coated with a first layer of epoxy-phenol, and a second, more flexible layer which is insensitive to humidity and smoke, and has good qualities of adhesion to the first layer.
Preferably when the first layer is formed from an epoxyphenol resin, the second layer is formed from a polyamide lacquer such as polyurethane.
Preferably the double protection, by means of two superposed layers, of a coating which is insensitive to smoke, such as an epoxy-phenol resin and a more flexible coating, such as a polyamide such as polyurethane, is applied to the two faces, both interior and exterior, of the flexible piping.
An embodiment o f the present invention will now be described by way of example only.
An aluminium alloy strip coated with epoxy-phenol is preformed and coiled helicoidally upon itself and finally joined by folded seam so as to bind its edges imperviously together and in succession to each other.
Prior to the coiling operation a second layer is applied to the epoxy-phenol coating. This second layer is far more flexible than the first layer and is formed from a polyamide lacquer, for example polyurethane.
The presence of this second layer has, thanks to its flexibility, the effect of combining resistance to corrosion with mechanical protection of the strips, through a self-sealing effect.
Advantageously, this double protection, by means of two superposed layers, of a coating which is insensitive to smoke, such as an epoxy-phenol resin and a more flexible coating, such as a polyamide such as polyurethane, is applied to the two faces, both interior and exterior, of the flexible piping.
