Abstract

Apparatus for testing the fuse-rating of electrical appliances includes a three-in socket (12) for receiving the power plug of an appliance under test, power for the test apparatus being provided through a lead (11). The fuse rating of the appliance is indicated by light-emitting diodes (13) each representing a particular known rating. A liquid-crystal unit could form an alternative fuse-rating display. <IMAGE>

Description

FUSE-RATING TESTER This invention concerns apparatus for testing the fuse-rating of electrical appliances.
A standard multi-purpose current and resistance meter is the usual form of apparatus used for testing the fuse rating of electrical appliances. Such meters are time consuming to use and to set-up. The fuserating reading that they give is not immediately obvious and easy to read and therefore the meter is usually only suitable for use by persons trained and experienced in their use e.g. qualified electricians.
An object of the present invention is to provide a fuse-rating tester which provides an immediately obvious fuse-rating reading and is easily usable by nontechnical people to make a technical decision about the fuse-rating of the particular appliance tested.
With this object in view the present invention provides apparatus for testing the fuse-rating of electrical appliances, said apparatus comprising an external power input lead, a socket into which the appliance under test can be plugged, and display means providing an exact reading or indication of the fuserating of the tested appliance.
Advantageously the display means is a liquid crystal display.
As a more usual alternative the display means may be in the form of a series of light-emitting diodes next to each of which is an indication or representation of the fuse-rating to which the particular light-emitting diode relates.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which the single figure is a plan view of a preferred embodiment of the fuse-rating tester of the present invention.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, the preferred tester comprises a rectangular box-like housing (10) containing standard electronic circuits.
Power for the tester is provided via an external power input lead (11) which can be connected to mainssupply eletricity.
The tester also comprises a standard three-pin socket (12) for receiving the plug (not shown) of the power lead of an appliance to be tested.
Adjacent the socket (12) is a fuse-rating display (13), which in the embodiment shown is in the form of a series of seven light-emitting diodes.
It will be seen that each diode is designated with a particular fuse-rating, ranging from 1 amp to 13 amps.
The manner in which the fuse-rating tester is utilised will now be described.
First of all the external power input lead is connected to mains-supply electricity. The plug of the power lead of the appliance to be tested is plugged into the socket (12). Provided there is mains supply electricity, one of the series of seven LED's will light up giving a clear and unambiguous indication of the fuse-rating of the appliance under test.
It will be appreciated that the fuse-rating tester of the present application is simple and easy to use.
Moreover, it gives a clear and unambiguous indication of the fuse-rating of the appliance without the user of the tester having to have any technical knowledge whatsoever.
It will be seen from the drawing that the tester can also incorporate a fuse test device (14) comprising two spaced-apart electrical contacts with a lightemitting diode to indicate whether the fuse is intact or 'blown'.
It will be appreciated that if the fuse is 'blown' the LED of the fuse tester will not operate.
The invention is not confined to the precise details of the foregoing description and variations may be made thereto within the scope of the invention.
Thus, the fuse-rating indicator or display can be in the form of a liquid-crystal display unit providing a single digital reading of the fuse-rating of the appliance under test.

Claims (6)

1. Apparatus for testing the fuse-rating of electrical appliances, said apparatus comprising an external power input lead, a socket into which the appliance under test can be plugged, and display means providing an exact reading or indication of the fuserating of the tested appliance.
2. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1 wherein the display means is a liquid crystal display.
3. Apparatus as claimed in claim l wherein the display means is in the form of a series of lightemitting diodes next to each of which is an indication or representation of the fuse-rating to which the particular light-emitting diode relates.
4. Apparatus as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the socket is a standard three-pin socket.
5. Apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim further comprising a fuse test device comprising two spaced-apart electrical contacts with a light-emitting diode to indicate the condition of the fuse under test.
6. Apparatus for testing the fuse-rating of electrical appliances substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
