Abstract

An electric connector comprises a plug assembly (3) and a socket assembly (17, 18) for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control (5) for an audio cassette player 1. In order to permit use of a headphone having a jack plug other than that designed for exclusive use with an associated player, the plug assembly (fig 5) has a jack plug (13) for audio signal connection and a multi-contact plug (14) for remote control signal connection fixed on one and the same side of the plug housing (10) whereas the socket assembly (fig 7) has a jack socket (17) to permit insertion of the jack plug (13) of the plug assembly and another socket (18) to permit insertion of the multi-connector plug (14) of the plug assembly. <IMAGE>

Description

Electric connector for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control The present invention relates to an electric connector for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control. Such a headphone may be used with a cassette tape or disk stereo player which is light enough to be carried by hand.
Fig. 9 shows a conventional cassette tape stereo player 1 and a conventional headphone 2 equipped with a remote control 5.
Specifically headphone 2 comprises a plug assembly 3, a remote control 5 connected to the plug assembly 3 by a length of cord 4, and a pair of earphones 8 and 9 connected to the remote control 5 by different lengthes of cord 6 and 7. The plug assembly 3 has a plurality of pin terminals 11 projecting from one side of housing 10. The array of pin terminals 11 are made up by pin terminals for audio signal connection and for remote control signal connection, which pin terminals are arranged side by side. On the other hand, the player 1 has a jack: assembly 12 to permit insertion of the pin terminals 11 of the plug assembly 3. The player 1 permits exclusive use of associated headphone 2, not permitting a user to use a headphone having a rod type plug for audio signal connection even if he wants to use the headphone because of its acousitic quality.
In view of this one object of the present invention is to provide an electric connector for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control which electric connector permits use of a headphone having a rod plug other than that designed for exclusive use with an associated player.
To attain this object a plug assembly for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control according to the present invention is characterized in that its housing has a rod plug for audio signal connection and a multi-pin plug for remote control signal connection fixed on one and the same side. Also, a jack assembly for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control according to the present invention is characterized in that it has a first jack to permit insertion of a rod plug for audio signal connection and a second jack to permit insertion of a multipin plug for remote control signal connection, said jacks being arranged side by side. These arrangements permit insertion of the plug of a headphone available into the first jack of the player.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be understood from the following description of an electric connector according to one embodiment of the present invention, which is shown in accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a cassette tape stereo player with a jack assembly built therein, and a headphone equipped with a remote control and a plug assembly according to the embodiment of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view of a plug assembly according to the embodiment of the present invention; Fig. 3 is a left side view of the plug assembly; Fig. 4 is a front view of the plug assembly; Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the plug assembly; Fig. 6 is a plan view of a jack assembly according to the embodiment of the present invention; Fig. 7 is a front view of the jack assembly; Fig. 8 is a right side view of the jack assembly; and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a cassette tape stereo player with a conventional jack assembly built therein, and a conventional headphone equipped with a remote control and a plug assembly.
Figs. 1 to 8 show an electric connector according to one em bodiment of the present invention. Same parts are indicated by same reference numerals as used in Fig. 9, and descriptions of such common parts are omitted.
A plug assembly 3 for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control 5 has a rod plug 13 for audio signal connection and a multi-pin plug 14 for remote control signal connection fixed on one and the same side of the plug housing 10. The rod plug 13 has coaxial contacts 13a, 13b and 13c isolated by insulation collars 13d and 13e. The multi-pin plug 14 has contact pins 14b, 14c, 14d and 14e embedded in an insulation piece 14a.
As shown in Figs. 6 to 8, a jack assembly 15 has a round jack 17 to permit insertion of the rod plug 13 for audio signal connection and another rectangular jack 18 to permit insertion of the multi-pin plug 14 for remote control signal connection.
These jacks are arranged side by side on one and the same side of the jack housing 16.
As seen from Fig. 6, the jack 17 for audio signal connection has resilient contact pieces 19a, 19b and l9c in the jack housing 16. Specifically, these resilient contact pieces 19a, 19b and 19c are located so as to contact with the coaxial contacts 13a, 13b and 13c of the rod plug 13 upon insertion into the jack 17.
The jack 18 for remote control signal connection has contact pieces 20a, 20b and 20c in the jack housing 16. These contact pieces 20a, 20b and 20c are arranged side by side so as to contact with the contacts 14a, 14b, 14c and 14d of the multi-pin plug 14 upon insertion into the jack 18.
Terminals 19at, 19bt and 19ct are integrally connected to the resilient contact pieces 19a, 19b and 19c, and these terminals appear from the bottom of the jack housing 16. Likewise, ter minals 20at, 20bt, 20ct and 20dt are integrally connected to the contact pieces 20a, 20b, 20c and 20d, and these terminals appear from the bottom of the jack housing 16.
In use the rod plug 13 and the multi-pin plug 14 of the plug assembly 3 are inserted into the jack 17 for audio signal connection and the jack 18 for remote control signal connection, respectively. If a headphone available is used, it suffices that its rod plug is inserted into the jack 17 for audio signal connection.

Claims (4)

Claims:
1. Plug assembly for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control characterized in that its housing has a rod plug for audio signal connection and a multi-pin plug for remote control signal connection fixed on one and the same side.
2. Jack assembly for use with a headphone equipped with a remote control characterized in that it has a jack to permit insertion of a rod plug for audio signal connection and another jack to permit insertion of a multi-pin plug for remote control signal connection, said jacks being arranged side by side.
3. A plug assembly substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 2-5 of the accompanying drawings.
4. A jack assembly substantially as described herein with reference to Figs. 6-8 of the accompanying drawings.
