Abstract

A plug (1) of having contact pins (2, 3, 4), connected to an electrical cable (not shown), comprises external flanges (5, 6, 7, 8), perpendicular to the pins, between which the cable can be wound around the plug. A catch may be provided for releasably holding the wound cable in place. The catch is hinged on flange (5) and is a snap fit on flange (6). The flanges need not be solid and may be formed of bars. <IMAGE>

Description

PLUG This invention relates to electrical plugs, e.g.
three-pin plugs of the type which are almost universally used for connecting appliances to domestic mains sockets.
In use, it is desirable that a cable of reasonable length should connect the plug and an appliance which is not fixed. In appliances such as vacuum cleaners, it is known to provide a cable retractor so that the cable can be stored when the appliance is not in use, but this cannot be done for relatively small appliances such as, for example, hair dryers and soldering irons.
According to the present invention, the plug is provided with means for storing the cable. The novel plug comprises external flanges, substantially perpendicular to the plug pins, between which a cable can be wound around the plug. Preferably, some releasable locking means is provided, to hold the wound cable in place, during storage.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a highly schematic perspective view of an embodiment of the present invention. The drawing shows a plug having a body 1 and pins 2,3,4. In addition to a cable outlet (not visible in the given perspective), the plug has external flanges 5,6,7,8 between which the cable can be wound around the plug body 1. A catch 9 is hingedly mounted on one flange (5) and is snap-fitting on the opposite flange (6), and is adapted to hold the wound cable in place.
Alternatively, the flanges may be in the form of bars or other non-solid form, provided that the desired purpose is achieved.
Plugs according to the invention can be simply manufactured by known plastics moulding technology. The amount of material that is required is very little more than for a corresponding conventional plug from which the flanges are absent.

Claims (3)

1. A plug of the type having contact pins and adapted to be connected to an electrical cable, which comprises external flanges, substantially perpendicular to the pins, between which such a cable can be wound around the plug.
2. A plug according to claim 1, additionally comprising a lock for releasably holding the wound cable in place.
3. A plug substantially as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
