Abstract
The saw horse is adapted to grip a workpiece, e.g. a log, at or adjacent one end thereof. It comprises a vertical stand (1) and an upper jaw (3) fixed at or near an upper end of the stand (1). A lower jaw (4) is locatable by a pin (7) at any one of a plurality of positions on the stand, and may be adjusted by pivotal movement with respect to the upper jaw (3) by means of a handle (8) when the lower jaw (4) is located at any one position. <IMAGE>
Description
SAW HORSE
The present invention relates to a saw horse.
More particularly, but not exclusively, it relates to a saw horse for use in cutting logs, especially with the use of a chainsaw.
Where trees are felled, or are blown down, it is often necessary to cut them into smaller pieces at a location near to their original site. For this purpose, saw horses are advisable, but these saw horses must be transportable to the site. The commonest form hitherto in use comprises a pair of diagonally crossed end members, the lower arms of the cross serving as legs with the upper arms of the cross forming a support for the log to be cut.
However, such saw horses suffer from certain disadvantages.
Firstly, the log is supported at only two points, so the minimum length of log which may be cut is determined by the spacing of the ends. Also, the support afforded to the log will prevent it rolling away, but will not prevent it twisting, and in cases where the log is not straight, this may cause problems when using the chainsaw.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a saw horse which obviates or lessens the above disadvantages.
According to the present invention, there is provided a saw horse adapted to grip a workpiece at or adjacent one end thereof, the saw horse comprising a stand adapted to extend, in use, substantially vertically, an upper jaw fixedly located at or near an upper end of said stand, a lower jaw locatable at any one of a plurality of positions on said stand, and tightening means operable between said stand and said lower jaw to move said lower jaw with respect to said upper jaw when said lower jaw is located at any one of said plurality of positions.
Preferably each of the upper and lower jaws comprises a substantially right angled member so arranged on the stand that the space enclosed by the pair of jaws is substantially hexagonal or square.
Preferably each jaw is smooth edged, and optionally may comprise two lengths of angle section joined at an apex of the jaw.
The plurality of positions may be defined a plurality of apertures in the stand, and a pin locatable in any one of the said apertures to support the lower jaw.
The tightening means may comprise a manually operable screw in threaded engagement with a part of the lower jaw and abutting a rear face of the stand, whereby inward screwing will cause the lower jaw to pivot upwardly.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a saw horse embodying the invention; and
FIGURE 2 is a view of the saw horse of Figure 1 showing the jaws and tightening means in more detail.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a saw horse comprising a stand 1 mounted on a pair of legs 2.
The stand 1 and legs 2 are dimensioned so that the saw horse is transportable without undue difficulty.
An upper jaw 3 is attached at the upper end of stand 1. Upper jaw 3 comprises an inverted V-shaped piece formed of angle iron. The included angle is substantially a right angle and the gripping face of the jaw is smooth.
A lower jaw 4 is a V-shaped piece, with an included angle of substantially a right angle, and again is formed of angle iron presenting a smooth gripping face.
Lower jaw 4 is connected to a collar 5 surrounding the stand 1. The stand includes a number of holes 6 passing from one side to the other. A pin 7 may be inserted through any one of the holes 6 and serves, when inserted, to support the collar 5.
A handle 8 has a screw-threaded end portion 9 engaging through a correspondingly screw-threaded hole 10 in a rear portion of the collar 5 and bearing against the rear of the stand 1.
In order to use the saw horse, an end of a log is placed between the upper 3 and lower 4 jaws, the position of the lower jaws 4 having been approximately set by the position of pin 7. The handle 8 is then turned so that there is inward movement of the threaded portion 9 with respect to the threaded aperture 10. This forces the rear portion of the collar 5 away from the stand 1, and the collar 5 pivots about pin 7 forcing the lower jaw 4 to move upwardly and grip the end of the log more tightly. Once the log is secure, it may be cut into whatever length is desired, without any limitation on the length of the last piece.
Claims (6)
1. A saw horse adapted to grip a workpiece at or adjacent one end thereof, the saw horse comprising a stand adapted to extend, in use, substantially vertically, an upper jaw fixedly located at or near an upper end of said stand, a lower jaw locatable at any one of a plurality of positions on said stand, and tightening means operable between said stand and said lower jaw to move said lower jaw with respect to said upper jaw when said lower jaw is located at any one of.said plurality of positions.
2. A saw horse as claimed in claim 1, wherein each of the upper and lower jaws comprises a substantially right angled member so arranged on the stand that the space enclosed by the pair of jaws is substantially hexagonal or square.
3. A saw horse as claimed in either claim 1 or claim 2, wherein each jaw is smooth edged, and comprises two lengths of angle section joined at an apex of the jaw.
4. A saw horse as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein said plurality of positions is defined by a plurality of apertures in the stand, and a pin locatable in any one of the said apertures to support the lower jaw.
5. A saw horse as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the tightening means comprises a manually operable screw in threaded engagement with a part of the lower jaw and abutting a rear face of the stand, whereby inward screwing will cause the lower jaw to pivot upwardly.
6. A saw horse substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
