Abstract

A dental mouth prop comprises one arm 4 fixed to a square shaft 5 and one moveable arm 3 which slides in a perpendicular direction only. The moveable arm is spring loaded. Mounted on each arm is a swivel jaw 2 which enables the user to position the mouth prop between the upper & lower teeth. <IMAGE>

Description

DENTAL MOUT PROP This invention relates to a dental mouth prop.

At present the only dental mouth prop available known as the Me Kesson, consists of a rubber block in which grooves locate on the upper and lower sets of teeth. Attempts to close the mouth by the patient causes oompression on the block preventing the mouth from closing.

The block however due to it's size can restrict access to the mouth.

The present invention is a dental mouth prop comprising of one arm fixed to a square shaft, and one moveable arm which slides in a perpendicular direction only. The moveable arm is spring loaded. Mounted on each arm is a swivel jaw which enables the user to position between the upper and lower teeth.

A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows exploded view of assembly.

Referring to the drawing of the dental mouth prop comprising of assembly of 2,3,10, and 2,10,4, items 2 have a raised boss which when riveted to the required position, will allow controlled swivel movement to take place in any direction. The setting of item 5 to aperture of 3 & 4 prevents any side movement of 3 & 4 to each other.

The user locates items 2 between the upper and lower sets of teeth and sets the gap size to suit the patient. Any attempt by the patient to close the mouth prop brings the moments about force theory into effect. When the user has set the mouth prop he can then swing it to the side of the mouth thus gaining full access.

Items 2 are lined with suitable material to prevent tooth damage.

A screw and washer fixed to item 5 at moveable arm end prevents disassembly.

Claims

1. A dental mouth prop comprising of one arm fixed to a square shaft and one moveable arm which slides in a perpendicular direction only.

2. A dental mouth prop as claimed in claim 1 which has swivel jaws riveted to both fixed and moveable arms and is lined with suitable tooth protection.

3. A dental mouth prop as claimed in claims 1 & 2 which has a compression spring for release from patient.

4. A dental mouth prop as claimed in any previous claims in which all parts are of polished stainless steel and can withstand the normal sterilizing tempegature of 400c.

5. A dental mouth prop substantially as described in figure 1 of accompanying drawing.
