Abstract
A storage device for an elongate flexible article comprises a strip 11 of stiff resilient material, a pair of apertures 12 being provided one adjacent each end of the strip, a slit 13 extending between each aperture 12 and the adjacent edge of the strip. Rounded rib 15 may surround the store. <IMAGE>
Description
STORAGE DEVICE
The present invention relates to storage devices for electrical cables or leads; or similar flexible elongate articles such as ropes or plastic tubes. The storage devices are suitable for storing cables, leads etc. when not in use or for tidying excess lengths of cables, leads etc.
when in use.
According to one aspect of the present invention a storage device for elongate flexible articles comprises a strip of stiff resilient material, a pair of apertures being provided one adjacent each end of the strip, a slit extending between each aperture and an adjacent edge of the strip.
Elongate articles are wound onto the storage device, the article passing through the slits into the apertures. In order to accommodate the elongate articles, the material from which the strip is formed should be sufficiently flexible to permit passage of the elongate article through the slit, without damage to the elongate article. This may be achieved by use of material of appropriate resilience and/or design of the aperture and slit to restrict the cross section of the strip which is flexed. Preferably, a stiff resilient plastics material is used for this purpose.
The edges of the strip defining the slit may be contiguous or a clearance may be provided therebetween. The clearance should however be less than the minimum cross-sectional dimension of the elongate article for which the storage device is designed. In order to facilitate passage of the elongate article through the slit, tapered lead in portions may be provided from one or both ends of the slit.
The invention is now described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a plan view of a storage device in accordance with the present invention; and
Figure 2 shows a plan view of an alternative form of the storage device in accordance with the present invention.
The storage device 10 comprises a flat strip 11 of resilient plastics material. A pair of apertures 12 are provided adjacent each end of the strip 11. The apertures 12 are generally rectangular the side edges being parallel to one another and to the longitudinal edges of the strip 11 and the inner ends being transverse to the longitudinal edges of the strip 11. The outer ends of the apertures 12 are however V-shaped and slits 13 which are parallel to the longitudinal edges of the strip 11 connect the apex of the "V" to the adjacent end of the strip 11. The slits 13 are provided with tapered lead-in portions 14 which extend from the ends of the strip 11 part way along the slit 13.
A cable or like elongate article may be wound on to the storage device 10, the cable being forced through the slits 13 into the apertures 12. As the cable passes through the slits 13 into the apertures 12, the storage device may be used for the storage of cables having plugs or like fittings at each end which are incapable of passing through the apertures 12 and may furthermore be used to tidy up excess lengths of cable without removal of the cable from the appliance.
Storage devices in accordance with the present invention may be made in various sizes to accommodate different sizes of elongate articles. For example, for storage of mains leads, the storage device may be formed from a strip of resilient plastics material 400 mm long by 100 mm wide by 5 mm thick whereas for small diameter leads such as telephone cables, the strip may for example be 200 mm long by 60 mm wide and 3 mm thick or even smaller. The apertures 12 will be of appropriate dimensions to accommodate the elongate article.
In the alternative embodiment illustrated in Figure 2, the apertures 12 are rectangular, lead-in portions 14 being provided from each end of the slits 13. A radiused rib 15 is provided around the periphery of the strip 11, this rib 15 extending on both sides of the slits 13 and around the apertures 12. The rib 15 will strengthen the strip 11 and the radiused edges of the rib 15 will help to avoid damage to the elongate article as it passes through the slits 13.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the invention. For example, the shape of the strip 11 and apertures 12 may be varied as desired. Furthermore, the slits 13 may be provided between the apertures 12 and edge of the strip 11 at any appropriate position. For example, the slit may extend between the outer end of the apertures 12 and the side edges of the strip 11 at an adjacent position.
Claims (7)
1. A storage device for elongate flexible articles comprising a strip of stiff resilient material, a pair of apertures being provided one adjacent each end of the strip, a slit extending between each aperture and an adjacent edge of the strip.
2. A storage device according to Claim 1 in which the slit is dimensioned such that flexing of the strip is required to permit passage of the elongate article along the slit.
3. A storage device according to Claim 2 made of material of sufficient flexibility to permit passage of the elongate article through the slit without damage to the elongate article.
4. A storage device according to any one of the preceding claims in which a lead-in portion is provided to one or both ends of each slit.
5. A storage device according to any one of the preceding claims in which the strip of stiff resilient material is provided with stiffening ribs.
6. A storage device according to Claim 5 in which the edges of the strip of stiff resilient material defining the slit are provided with radiused ribs.
7. A storage device substantially as described herein, with reference to and as shown in, Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
