Abstract

A microwave oven door catch mechanism 1 has two fixed catch pegs 1 which are attached to the oven door. Two corresponding latches 2 form part of a sliding assembly that is spring loaded to create a latching effect that will hold the door in a closed position. Two switches 3 are mounted to the assembly one being activated by each catch when it has interlocked with its latch and the door is safely closed. in order to minimize the size of the mechanism in the region of the lower catch where space may be limited, both switches are situated at the top of the assembly. One of the switches being activated by a mechanical linkage from the lower latch. The small cross sectional area of this mechanism makes it ideal for insertion into a small latch compartment within a single skinned microwave oven. <IMAGE>

Description

MICROWAVE OVEN DOOR CATCH MECHANISM.
Descriotion of Tnvention A door catch mechanism for use on microwave ovens; In a microwave oven it is necessary for the latching door catches to activate switches before the power source can be energised. Wanly microwave ovens utilise a double skin construction and locate the switches between the oven cavity and an outer wrap.
This invention however is concerned with single skin ovens in which one or more of the latches is situated in its own compartment within the oven cavity (fig 1).
For practical reasons it is desirable that this intrusion into the cooking space be as small as posible.
This invention alows the switches to be situated remotely from the catches. therefour minimising the space loss in the oven itself Figure 2 shows the arrangement of the components. The invention comprises; 1 Two fixed catch pegs 2 Two connected latches that are sprung in a vertical plane to create a latching effect.
3 Switches situated in a unit forming part of the upper latch, one or more of the switches being activated by the interlocking of the upper catch.
4 A rocker situated in the vacinity of the lower latch such that it is tipped only when the lower catch interlocks with its latch 5 A push rod that transfers the motion of the rocker to one of the switches successfully activating it.
A door catch mechanisum built to this arangement can be inserted into a very small conpartment that causes the minimum of intrusion into the oven

Claims (6)

  1. CLAIMS 1 A microwave oven door catch mechanism comprising two or more catches fixed to the oven door, two moevable spring loaded latch pieces, two switches that are connected to and move with said latch pieces, a mechanical linkage that is connected to and moves with said latch pieces such that when said catches mate with said latches one or more of said switches is operated by one of said catches via said mechanical linkage.
  2. 2 A microwave oven door catch mechanism as claimed in claim 1 wherein said switches are positioned remotely from one or more of the latches.
  3. 3 A microwave oven door catch mechanism as claimed i claim 1 or claim 2 wherein one or more of said switches is directly operated by one or more of said catches when door is latched.
  4. 4 A microwave oven door catch mechanism as claimed Ir: claim 2 or 3 wherein Mechanical means are provided to move said moveable latches effectivly unlatching the door.
  5. 5 A microwave oven door catch mechanism as claimed in any preceding claim for use on a single skin microwave oven.
  6. 6 A microwave oven door catch mechanism substartiaThThy as described herein with reference to figures i an, 2 of the accompanying drawing.
