Abstract
A double glazed unit having a transparent edge is formed from two sheets of glass arranged to extend substantially parallel to, and spaced from, one another by means of a transparent spacer. The perimetral edges of the two sheets may be connected by way of a glass tube which is manufactured to form a substantially rectangular frame. This frame is sandwiched between the perimetral edges of the two glass sheets and is adhered thereto by a transparent adhesive.
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO DOUBLE GLAZED UNITS
The present invention relates to a double glazed unit and to a method of manufacturing double glazed units.
Currently, the two glazed panels of a double glazed unit are joined at their edges by retention means, for example of aluminium. Because of this the edges of the unit are not transparent, and, in fact, no completely transparent double glazed units are presently available. This is advantageous where the units are to be used for visual effect.
According to the present invention there is provided a double glazed unit comprising two sheets of a transparent material arranged to extend substantially parallel to, and spaced from, one another, and sealing means arranged to extend around the perimeter of said unit and to connect the perimetral edges of said two sheets, wherein said sealing means comprises at least one elongate member of transparent material interposed between, and connected to, said sheets at or near their perimetral edges, the or each transparent, elongate member being connected to said sheets by way of transparent adhesion means.
A double glazed unit of the invention has a transparent edge, formed by the transparent sealing means and the transparent adhesion means. The entire unit can therefore be made to be wholly transparent.
Generally, the two sheets of which the double glazed unit is comprised would be of glass, although other transparent materials can be used if required.
The or each elongate member forming the sealing means may be made of any transparent material. For example, the elongate member or members may be made of glass, polycarbonate, UPVC or the like. The elongate member or members may be solid, for example with a rectangular or circular cross-section, or hollow, again with either a rectangular or circular cross-section.
The sealing means may comprise a frame formed of a number of said elongate pieces, or a single elongate member may be formed to define the frame.
In one preferred embodiment, said sealing means comprises an elongate glass tube formed to provide a frame. The tube may be solid or hollow.
In an alternative embodiment, four elongate members of transparent polycarbonate are provided, each having a substantially identical rectangular cross-section. The four elongate members are connected together to form a frame which defines the sealing means for the double glazed unit.
The two sheets of transparent material are affixed to the sealing means by way of transparent adhesion means. For example, a transparent very high bnd adhesive might be used. This may be in pasty or viscous form, or as a transparent tape having opposed surfaces each with high adhesive properties. Generally, transparent silicon sealants are used to join adjacent double glazed units and it is important that the transparent adhesion means be compatible with such silicon sealants so that there is no degradation of the seals made thereby.
It is generally required to evacuate or pressurise the inner space in a double glazed unit. To allow for this, one or more holes can be drilled through the sealing means to enable access to the inner space.
The invention also relates to a method of forming a double glazed unit comprising affixing the perimetral edge of two sheets of a transparent material to transparent sealing means such that the sealing means connect the perimetral edges of said two sheets which are maintained spaced from one another and extending substantially parallel, wherein, said sheets and the sealing means are affixed by way of transparent adhesion means.
In an embodiment, said sealing means is arranged to form a frame which is sandwiched between the perimetral edges of said two sheets of transparent material.
A specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example.
A double glazed unit having a transparent edge is formed from two sheets of glass which are substantially rectangular and are to be arranged to extend substantially parallel to, and spaced from, one another in the manner of a conventional double glazed unit. The perimetral edges of the two sheets are connected by way of glass tube, which may be hollow, and which is manufactured to form a substantially rectangular frame.
This frame is sandwiched between the perimetral edges of the two glass sheets and is adhered thereto to make a sealed double glazed unit. The adhesive is transparent, and may be in pasty or viscous form, or may comprise a transparent tape having two opposed adhesive surfaces.
Of course, the transparent adhesive, in whatever form, should be high bond adhesive. It is also important that the adhesive is compatible with the transparent silicon sealants which are commonly used to join two adjacent, double glazed units.
It will be appreciated that the resultant double glazed unit is distinct from traditional double glazed units in that it has a transparent edge. This is particularly important where the double glazed unit is to be used for decorative effect.
It will be appreciated that variations in, and alterations to, the invention as described above may be made within the scope of this application.
