Abstract

A roofing fastening in which a pair of scaffolding tube clamps (2, 3) opening in opposite directions are interconnected by a link (4) which is preferably corrugated to conform with corrugation of sheeting (14, 15) the sides of which are clamped by the fastening. <IMAGE>

Description

ROOFING FASTENING The present invention relates to fastenings for temporary roofing such as corrugated roofing to scaffolding and the like.
In order to secure corrugated metal or plastic sheeting to forri a roofing for a scaffolded structure it is con to la the sheeting on a horizontal scaffoldillg member and simply clamp another horizontal member over the sheeting to trap the sheeting between the two horizontal embers.
Tills is easy to do but is not a positive fixing rlethod. A safur method is to provide a securing means comprising d hook wlth a threaded stem. The sheetiny is laid overlapping as before on horizontal members, the sheeting is pierced next to the horizontal member, the hook stem is threaded up through the sheeting so that the hook engage on the horizontal member and the sheeting is secured to the horizontal member by a nut on threaded stem. This is secure but damages the sheeting and if this is reused it is difficult to align holes already pierced in the sheeting.A further means of securing the sheeting is by providing a clip comprising a clamp and two longitudinal parts, the first part of which is welded to the clamp and the second part is of similar dimensions to the first part and is secured at one end to the first part by a wing nut. After placing the sheeting on the horizontal member so that it overlaps, the clip is clamped to the horizontal member with the first part aligned longitudinally below the sheets. The second part is then secured to the first part so that the overlap of the sheets is clamped between the two parts. This provides an easy method of securing sheeting, does not damage the sheets but is insecure in windy conditions.
A roofing fastening according to the present invention comprises a pair of scaffolding tube clamps opening in opposite directions and a longitudinal interconnecting link extending from one clamp to the other clamp.
Sheeting is secured by placing a first sheet on a lower horizontal member, clamping the first clamp of the fastening to the lower member so that the link extends over and across part of the width of the first sheet, placing a second sheet over the first clamp and link and more or less against the second clamp so the linl; is between the sheets and placing a second horizontal member over the first horizontal member in the or several such second clamps so that the sheets are claimed between the two horizontal members.
The link is preferably shaped in conformity with the type of sheeting used which is mostly corrugated. In the case of use for corrugated sheeting the link is long enough to extend across two peaks and one trough.
Preferably the link is of strip steel extending to a transverse part or portion at each end, each portion carrying a hinged clamp arm and means to secure the clamp arm.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the roofing fastening according to. the present invention, Figure 2 is an end elevation of the bottom clamp of the fastening of Figure 1, Figure 3 is an end elevation of the top clamp of the fastening of Figure 1, and Figure 4 is a perspective view of roofing clamped by the fastening of Figure 1.
In the drawings the roofing fastening is shown at 1 which is formed from a first clamp 2 and a second clamp 3 with a link 4 extending from the clamp to the other clamp.
The link is formed from a strip of steel welded to transverse end members 5 and 6 to each of which are hingedly mounted a clamp arm 7 and a threaded pin 8 carrying a nut 9. The hinged mounting of the arm 7 and pin 8 is by means of the ends of the arms and pins being forked to receive a riveted pin 10 which is inserted through each hole 11 in the extremities of transverse members 5 and 6. ' The 1 link 4 is formed into a sinusoidal form to correspond with the form of the sheeting shown in broken lines at 14 and 15 which is normally corrugated sheeting.
To secure the sheets 14 and 15 to form a roof, a lower horizontal member suitably a scaffold tube 17 is provided and a first fastening 1 is secured by its lower clamp 2 to the tube 17 at A. Sheet 15 is laid over the fastening so that its side edge 20 more or less abuts the end member 6 of the top clamp 3 and the corrugation for the sinusoidal link, the link extending across the width of the sheet. A second fastening is secured by its lower clamp 2 to the tube 17 at B so that its end member 5 more or less abuts the side edge 22 of sheet 15 so that its link 4 extends over and across part of the width of sheet 15. The second sheet 14 is laid over the link 4 of fastening 1 at position B so that its side edge 24 more or less abuts end member 6 of the top clamp 3 at position B. A further fastening 1 is similarly secured to the tube 17 at position C. A top tube 18 is then laid in top clamps 3 and the top clamps are then secured to the top tube 18 so that the sheets 14 and 15 are clamped securely between the tubes 17 and 18.
The distance between the clamps 2 and 3 is normally about 6 inches (152 mm) for sheeting with corrugations about 3 inches (76 mm) between the peaks.
The fastenings have been found to provide an easy and secure method of securing down sheeting in windy conditions.
