Abstract

A one-piece collar comprising a tuck (18) formed between the collar portion (26) and the neckband portion (24), the depth of the tuck (18) increasing towards the centre of the collar. The edge of the tuck (18) adjacent the neckband portion (24) is of lesser curvature than the edge of the tuck (18) adjacent the collar portion (26). The main body of the collar is of one piece construction, but additional layers may be involved. For example two layers of material may be placed either side of a layer of lining material, slits being provided in the lining material in the region of the folded edge of the tuck. The collar fold is formed in this area and the product has the appearance of a two part collar. <IMAGE>

Description

GARMENT COLLAR This invention relates to collars and neckbands for garments and more particularly to collars and neckbands made from the same piece of material.
Traditionally a collar structure comprises a collar and neckband made from two separate pieces, each of which may comprise two layers of fabric separated by a layer of lining material. The collar piece is attached to the neckband which in turn is attached to the main body of the garment. The collar piece is then turned down along the seam formed between the collar piece and the neckband.
This results in a collar structure which has a desirably well defined folded edge.
The manufacture of such a collar structure is a highly skilled operation and may result in a variation in the depth to which the collar piece is inserted into the neckband, which affects the curvature and fit of the collar and the length of the protruding points.
In order to simplify their manufacture, collar structures have been developed which do not consist of a separate collar piece and neck band. A one-piece 'collar' is formed, which may then be attached to the main body of the garment. The lining of the 'collar' is split in order to form the desired fold. However the fold of this 'collar' does not have the desired definition/firmness, as is the case with the traditional two-piece collar structure.
Alternatively a tuck may be made in the middle of the one-piece collar in order to provide the impression of a folded edge, as is provided by the two-piece collar structure. The width of this tuck is uniform along the length of the 'collar' and the resulting collar does not display the fit of the two-piece collar.
In accordance with the invention a one-piece collar structure has a tuck formed between the collar portion and the neckband portion, the depth of the tuck increasing towards the centre of the collar. This means that the sewn edge of the tuck adjacent the neckband portion is of lesser curvature than the sewn edge of the tuck adjacent the collar portion.
The fit of such a 'collar' around the neck of a wearer is a great improvement over known one-piece collars and does not require a greater degree of skill to manufacture.
Slits may be provided in the lining of the 'collar' in the vicinity of the folded edge of the tuck to help to provide a smooth and crease free collar. The slits suitably are parallel to the bottom edge of the neckband portion, which is adapted to be sewn to the garment.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of the lining for a one-piece collar according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the lining of Figure 1 attached to an outer piece of material of the one-piece collar.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the partially complete collar of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the collar of Figure 2, near completion.
The lining 2 for a one-piece collar comprises three pieces of lining material 4,6,8, two pieces 6,8 being arranged on the other larger piece 4, in the manner shown in Figure 1. Slits 10 are provided in piece 4 in the region in which the collar is ultimately to be folded.
The lining 2 is then attached, by any known method, to a piece of facing material 12, as shown in Figure 2.
The material and lining are then folded along the line defined by the slits 10, so that the right sides of material 12 are together.
A seam 13 (as shown in Figure 3) is then sewn along a line substantially parallel to the bottom edge 14 of lining piece 6.
As can be seen from the drawings, the bottom edge 14 of the 'collar' lining piece 6 is substantially more curved than the neighbouring edge 16 of the 'neckband' lining piece 8 and also the slit 10.
A seam sewn along a line substantially parallel to the bottom edge 14 of the lining piece 6 will therefore result in a tuck/fold 18, the depth of which increases from the outer edges of the collar to the middle.
The fold 18 is then pressed down towards the 'neckband' lining 8 and sewn in place. Another piece of material 20, similar in shape to piece 12, is then attached to the outer collar and lining assembly along the outer edge, with the right sides of piece 12 and piece 20 together (as shown in Figure 4). The bottom edge 22 is left open, to be attached to the body of the garment.
When such a collar is laid on a flat surface and the lower part (the 'neckband') 24 held flat, the collar part 26 will be 'sprung' i.e. it will not be flat.
The sewn article is then turned inside-out so that the right sides of material pieces 12 and 20. are outermost. The collar is then overstitched in the traditional way and the collar is attached to the body of a garment with the piece of material 12, incorporating the sewn fold 18, forming the inside of the collar. The collar part 26 is then turned down along the seam 13, to produce the appearance of a conventional collar.
The invention extends to both a one-piece collar and to a garment having such a collar.
