Abstract
An end fitting for a fuel filler pipe of a motor vehicle provides a pocket 24, a terminal 26 to which a filler cap 30 can be secured, and a drain opening 34 from the pocket. These three functions may be provided in one single plastics moulding which can be easily fitted at one end to the filler pipe and at the other end to the vehicle bodywork. <IMAGE>
Description
End Fitting for a Fuel Filler Pipe
This invention relates to an end fitting for a fuel filler pipe for use on a motor vehicle.
It is known to provide a pocket in the bodywork of a motor vehicle, and to locate the end of the fuel filler pipe inside the pocket, and then to provide a flush closure to the pocket, the closure being flush with the surrounding bodywork. It is desirable to provide a drain for this pocket so that any spillage of fuel as the tank is being filled does not run down the side of the vehicle.
According to the present invention, there is provided an end fitting for the fuel filler pipe of a motor vehicle, the fitting forming a pocket in the body and also forming a terminal end for the fuel filler pipe, the pocket containing both a socket for receiving and securing a fuel filler cap, and a drain passage for draining the pocket.
Preferably the fitting is formed by a single plastics moulding which can conveniently be an injection moulding.
The drain passage may have a spigot onto which a drain pipe can be connected to conduct anything drained from the pocket.
Where the fuel filler pipe is also made of plastics, for example as part of a blow moulded fuel tank, then the end fitting may be welded to the filler pipe.
The invention also provides a motor vehicle having a pocket in the bodywork for housing the end of the fuel filler pipe, wherein the pocket is formed by a plastics moulding which also provides a terminal for the fuel filler pipe and a drain passage for draining the pocket.
The plastics moulding may be screwed or clipped to the edge of an opening in the vehicle bodywork.
The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a cross section1 through an end fitting in accordance with the invention.
In the drawing, part of the exterior sheet metal bodywork of a motor vehicle is indicated at 10, the sheet metal surrounding a bodywork opening at 12.
A blow-moulded fuel filler pipe 14 is also shown. Between the pipe 14 and the sheet metal 10, an end fitting 16 is located. This end fitting is a plastics injection moulding and is connected by welding at 18 to the end of the filler pipe 14. At the other side, the fitting 16 has a peripheral flange 20 which is secured to the inside of the sheet metal 10, with a foam seal 22 between, by screwing or clipping to the bodywork.
The fitting 16 forms a pocket 24 for containing the end of the fuel filler pipe. In addition to forming the pocket, the fitting also provides a terminal 26 for the fuel filler pipe into which a recessed filler cap (indicated in dotted lines at 30) or a flush fitting cap (indicated in dotted lines at 32) can be fitted. Internal details of the terminal 26 are not shown in the drawing but will be such as to retain the cap 30 or 32, through a threaded or bayonet connection or through any other suitable connection.
A third function of the fitting 16 is to provide a drain passage which takes the form of an outlet at 34 so that any fuel which may be spilt when filling the tank drains away through the drain outlet 34 to a pipe 36 connected to the outlet. This drain will also drain any water which may find its way into the pocket. The outlet pipe 36 can be directed to any convenient location.
The design of the end fitting as shown is particularly suitable for injection moulding, and the moulding tool can be withdrawn in the direction of the double ended arrow 38.
The end fitting as shown here provides three functions, namely a pocket in the vehicle bodywork, a terminal for securing the filler cap, and a drain outlet.
