Abstract

The drive bar 21, 31 of a rack and pinion type espagnolette fastening for windows or doors is characterised in that it is of different width within the pinion housing 4, 34 than outside it. Preferably the width within the housing is about 13mm and outside, 16mm. <IMAGE>

Description

ESPAGNOLETTE The invention relates to an espagnolette assembly of the type fitted within a door or window frame member for transmitting the rotary action of a handle to one or more remote latches to enable the door or window to be opened.
A known espagnolette assembly comprises an elongate bar receivable within a complementary channel provided on a first frame member of an opening window or door. At least one latch means is present on the bar which is engageable with a complementary latch on a second outermost fixed frame member which, when the window or door is in the closed condition, lies adjacent the first frame member.A bracket defining a through passageway to receive a length portion of the bar is adapted to be secured to the first member and includes a rotary pinion means connectible between a rotary handle disposed externally of the first frame member and a rack means disposed on the bar, the assembly being arranged such that rotation of the pinion by the handle causes the bar to move in the direction of its length within the channel between a first condition in which the latches are engaged and a second condition in which the latches are disengaged to allow the door or window to be opened.
It is usual for a window manufacturer to provide his window with a complementary channel of a standard width to receive the bar, e.g of 13 mm width. However, a new standard width of greater than 13 mm, e.g 16 mm, is gaining acceptance and it is a problem for the manufacturer to make an espagnolette in two or more different sizes because the dimensions of the other component parts of the assembly have to be altered also.
According to a first aspect of the invention an espagnolette assembly as defined above is characterised in that the length portion of the bar and the complementary through passageway of the bracket is of a different width with respect to the remainder of the bar.
Preferably the bar has a width of substantially 16 mm and includes a generally central length portion which is of reduced width, e.g 13 mm. In this way a bracket having a passageway of width 13 mm may be used without modification both with a known espagnolette bar of width 13 mm along substantially all of its length, and also with the 16 mm wide bar of the invention.
In order that the invention may be better understood it will now be described by way of example with reference to the-accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a known espagnolette assembly; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section along line I-I of Figure t; Figure 3 is a cross-section through a frame member including an espagnolette according to Figures 1 and 2; Figure 4 is a partial perspective view of an espagnolette assembly according to one embodiment of the invention; and Figure 5 is a partial perspective view of an espagnolette assembly according to another embodiment of the invention.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 a known espagnolette assembly comprises a length of metal bar 1 of rectangular section having a width 2 of about 13 mm. An L-shaped bracket 4 formed from metal sheet is wrapped about the bar to define a through passageway 5.
A pair of spaced apart screw holes 6 are present within the upstanding portion 7 of the bracket 4.
A rotary pinion 8 defining a square through aperture 9 to receive a rotary handle (not shown) is sandwiched between the opposing walls of the upstanding portion 7. The pinion 8 includes three radially extending teeth 10 which intermesh with complementary teeth 11 provided on a rack 12 secured to the bar 1.
As shown in Figure 3, the bar is receivable within a channel C within a frame member F, the channel being of complementary width to that of the bar. A slot S is present in the floor of the channel to receive the upstand 7 of the bracket 4. Screws (not shown) extend through the walls of the slot S and into the screw holes 6 on the bracket to secure it thereto. In use, a rotary handle (not shown) extends through a wall of the frame member F and into the square aperture 9 in the pinion 8. The espagnolette assembly further includes latch means comprising a pair of roller studs 13 engageable with complementary latch means (not shown) disposed on a fixed frame member (not shown) which, when the window is in the closed condition, lies adjacent and in parallel with the frame member F.
The assembly is arranged so that rotation of the external handle causes the pinion to move the rack and the bar in the direction of its length relative to the bracket and the frame between a first condition in which the latches are engaged, and a second condition in which the latches are disengaged and the window may be opened. The bracket may be generally T-shaped, as shown, so that the upstanding portion 7 extends upwardly from a longitudinal edge portion of the bar, or the bracket may be of an inverted T-shape so that the upstanding portion 7 extends from the centre of the bar 1 or any other suitable position.
Two embodiments of an espagnolette assembly according to the invention are shown in Figures 4 and 5. These are generally similar to that described with reference to Figures 1 to 3 except that the overall width 22, 32 of each bar 21, 31 is increased, e.g to about 16 mm. Each bar 21, 31 includes a central length portion 23, 33 of reduced width, e.g about 13 mm, which is received within the passageway 5 of the bracket 4, 34. In the espagnolette of Figure 4, the bracket 4 is generally L-shaped and a recess or step 24 is present on one longitudinal edge only of the bar. The recess 24 is of a length sufficient to accommodate relative movement of the bar between the two conditions of use.
In the espagnolette shown in Figure 5 the bracket 34 is of the inverted T type, and a recess 35 is present on each opposing longitudinal edge of the bar.
It is of great advantage to the manufacturer that even though he may need to make the bar of such assemblies in a variety of widths, he can use the same size of bracket without modification to the bracket.
The invention is not limited to the embodiments shown. For example the passageway for the bracket need not entirely enclose the bar.

Claims (4)
