Abstract
A method of making plugs, comprises inserting pins (2a, 2b, 2c) into a moulding die, orientating the pins (2a, 2b, 2c) to the appropriate orientation using slits (4c) in the pins so as to facilitate subsequent connection of electrical leads, and performing a single moulding operation which simultaneously forms the base (1) of the plug housing and insulating shrouds (3b, 3c) extending from the base (1) along part of the length of the live pins (2b, 2c). The base (1) and insulating shrouds (3b, 3c) are integrally formed with one another.
Description
Electric Plum, and method of manufacture thereof
The present invention relates to electric plugs comprising one or more pins. In this specification that end of a pin which is secured to the housing of the plug will hereinafter be referred to as the "plug end" of the pin and that end of the pin which is inserted into the aperture of an electrical socket will hereinafter be referred to as the "socket end" of the pin.
The invention provides an improved method of making such plugs comprising the steps of (a) inserting the pin or pins into a moulding die; (b) orientating the pin or pins relative to the
die to a predetermined orientation so as to
facilitate subsequent connection of electrical
leads to the pin or pins; and (c) performing a single moulding operation which
simultaneously forms the base of the plug
housing and insulating shrouds extending from
the base of the plug housing along part of the
length of the live pins, the base and
insulating shrouds being integrally formed
with one another.
The method of the invention has many advantages over existing methods of making plugs. A single moulding operation forms the base of the plug housing, forms the insulating shrouds, and joins the base, the shrouds and the pins to one another, with the pins correctly aligned for subsequent connection of electrical leads.
Pins are known which are round and which are slit axially along part of their length. The purpose of this slit is to enable the pin to be a force fit in a socket contact so as to facilitate good electrical contact between the pin and the side walls of the socket contact.
When the method of the invention is used to make plugs which have round slit pins of the type described, then in accordance with a preferred method of carrying out the invention, the step of orientating the pins relative to the die to the desired predetermined orientation is carried out by reference to the orientation of the slit in the pins.
The invention also provides a plug comprising a base for the plug housing, and insulating shrouds for the pins, the base and insulating shrouds being formed integrally with one another, with the pins being moulded into the base and the shrouds in an orientation which facilitates subsequent electrical connections.
The invention will now be described more particularly with reference to the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, one construction of plug according to the invention comprising two live round pins, and one round earth pin, with the cover or roof of the plug housing omitted for clarity. In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view from above; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view from below.
Referring to the drawing, the plug will now be described in detail. The plug comprises a base 1 of the plug housing1 an earth pin 2a and live pins, 2b, 2c, and cylindrical insulating pin shrouds, 3b, 3c and a plug cover (not shown). The base 1 and the pin shrouds, 3b, 3c are formed as part of a single integral plastic moulding. The pins 2a, 2b, 2c are aligned so that the slits 4b, 4c are mutually parallel and are mutually at right angles to slit 4c. With the gaps 4a, 4b, 4c appropriately aligned, the aperture 5a, 5b, Sc at the plug end of the pins are each orientated in the appropriate direction to facilitate connection of electrical leads (not shown). From the drawings it will be noted that the inside face of the base 1 of the plug housing is planar over all of its area, save for the three guides 6a, 6b, 6c for the pins. The planar nature of the base 1 also facilitates connection of the electrical leads. The base 1 is made of a transparent plastic material which allows the electrical connections in the plug housing to be inspected without the need to disassemble the housing.
The plug is manufactured by placing the three pins 2a, 2b, 2c in a die (not shown), aligning the pins so that the gaps 4a, 4b, 4c are appropriately orientated, and then performing the moulding operation to produce the base 1 and the insulating shrouds, 3b, 3c.
