Abstract
A position stabilising and damping arrangement is for use with a suspended body ie. a weigh hopper (10). The arrangement includes two damping devices (12). Each device (12) comprises a first tank (14) located within a second tank (16) containing a liquid, namely oil. The first tank (14) has a top (18), a side surround (20) and a bottom (26) in which one or more apertures (24) are provided for passage of liquid. The second tank (16) has a bottom (26), a side surround (28) and an open top through which the first tank (14) passes. The second tanks (16) are each supported on a stationary frame (30) with the first tanks (14) each being carried on a respective arm (32) projecting from said hopper (10). In a modification (Figs 5, 6) the first and second tanks each have one or more baffle walls (38, 40) which are interleaved to provide a labyrinth arrangement. <IMAGE>
Description
POSITION ST.R3ILISIN AND DAMPING ARiAgaEIENTS .
This invention relates to a position stabilising and damping arrangement primarily, but not necessarily, for use with a weigh hopper supported through suspension means, particularly but not essentially load cells, from a stationary structure.
A problem with weigh hoppers is that when material is fed thereinto to be held thereiii during a weighing operation the hopper moves, however is required to be stabilised for such operation to give acurate readings of the weight.
An object of the present invention is to provide means to stabilise a weigh hopper in a manner to obviate or mitigate the problem.
Accordingly, the present invention is a position stabilising and damping arrangement for use with a suspended body, the arrangement including at least two damping devices, each device comprising a first tank located within a second tank containing a liquid, the first tank having a top, a side surround and a bottom in which one or more apertures are provided for passage of liquid with the second tank having a bottom, a side surround and an open top through which the first tank passes, the second tanks each being supported on a stationary frame with the first tanks each being carried on a respective arin projecting from said body.
Preferably, the tanks are of similar concentric shape, desirably of rectangular horizontal crosssection. Two devices are preferably provideS with their first tanks carried on respective arms projecting from opposite locations on said body.
Tne liquid is preferably oil. The first tank of each device may preferably have one or laore baffle walls, similar in shape to te side surround and sequentially spaced inwardly from the side surround, an the corresponding second tank of the device may be provided with one or more baffle walls with the side surround and baffle wall(s) of the first tank being sequentially spaced inwardly of the corresponding side surround and baffle wall(s) of the second tank.
Desirably, one additional baffle wall is provided in each second tans than in each first tank with the bottom of the first tank being supported on a central spindle with its edyes spaced from said additional baffle wall of the second tank.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which;
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a weigh hopper having two position stabilising and damping arrangements according to the present invention mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a side view; Fiy. 3 is a front view;
Fig. 4 is a vertical cross-sectional view of an arrangement to an enlarged scale;
Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-sectional view of a modified arrangement to the same scale as Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a horizontal cross-sectional view on the line VI-VI of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, a position stabilising and daitping arrangement is for use with a suspended body, in this elabodiment a weigh hopper 10. The arrangement includes two similar damping devices 12.
sach device 12 comprises a first tank 14 located within a second tank 16 which contains a liquid, desirably oil.
The first tank 14 has a top 1S, a side surround 20 and a bottom 22 in which one or more [two in this embodiment) apertures in the form of slots 24 are provided for passage of liquid. The second tank 16 has a bottom 26, a side surround 2.3 and an open top through which the first tank 14 passes. The second tanks 16 are each supported on a separate stationary frame 30. The first tanks 14 are carried on a respective arm 32 projecting from opposite locations of said hopper 10. The hopper 10 is supported by load cells 34 from a stationary structure represented by beams 36.
The tanks 14, 16 are of similar concentric shape, in this embodiment of rectangular horizontal crosssection as shown.
In use, when material is fed into the nopper 13 and held therein to be weighed, the hopper 13 moves due to its movable suspension means, however tne arrangements dampen the moveents and stabilise the hopper 13.
In a modification as shown in Figs. 5 and o, the first tank 14 of each device has one or more baffle walls 38 one in this modification and as snown in the drawings, similar in shape to the side surround 20 and sequentially spaced inwardly from tne side surround 23, and the corresponding second tank 16 of the device is provided with one or more baffle walls 43 (two in tis modification) with the side surround 23 and baffle walls 33 of the first tank 14 being sequentially spaced inwardly of the corresponding side surround 23 and baffle walls 40 of the second tank 16. In this modification, one additional baffle wall 40 is provided in the second tank 16 than in the first tank 14 with the bottom 22 of the first tank 14 being supported on a central spindle 42 rooted to the top 13 with the edges of the bottom 22 spaced from said additional baffle wall 40 of the second tank 16. The spindle 42 is provided with gusset webs 44 between itself and the bottom 22 and between itself and the top 13. This modification provides the arrangements with greater stability than those of the embodiment.
