Abstract

Roasting. - Ores are roasted by being passed through a roasting chamber while suspended in an air current which is preferably preheated, the chamber being maintained at the required temperature by the reaction itself, and the ores being .passed therethrough first in an upward and then in a downward direction. The roasted product may be separated from the gases by centrifugal action or by electrical precipitation. In the plant shown, ore from feed screws V<1> and heated air from a fan V and pre-heating chamber R<1> which surrounds the concentric roasting chamber A, B, are injected into the bottom of the chamber A and pass down the chamber B to outlets O leading by way of an annular chamber C and passage D to a settling chamber E which they enter tangentially, the gases afterwards passing through a dustcollecting chamber F to an outlet G. The roasted ore is withdrawn through doors P, P<1>, P<2>. Oversize ore which is too heavy to be entrained in the air current may be collected from the bottom of the chamber A through doors P<3>.
