Abstract
A steel reinforced concrete barrier comprises two or more units which may be interlinked by means of a post (6). <IMAGE>
Description
MODULAR TRAFFIC BARRIER UNITS
This invention relates to a modular road traffic barrier comprising one or more units.
Road traffic barriers are used to direct traffic, separate diverging traffic, segregate opposing traffic and protect roadside installations. Such barriers are structures with essentially permanent foundations and are not constructed for use in temporary road traffic lane control.
According to the present invention there is a modular reinforced concrete unit of such size, configuration, shape and mass that a contiguous interlinking road traffic barrier may be formed by a number of units. The units do not require permanent foundations, they are transportable and may be stored and reused as occasion demands.
A specific embodiment of the invention is described by text and by reference to the accompanying drawing in which
Fig 1 shows a side elevation
Fig 2 shows a plan
Fig 3 shows an end elevation
Fig 4 shows interlinking units
Referring to the drawing the modular traffic barrier unit comprises a steel reinforced concrete structure 1 each end of which accomodates a vertical slot 2 which together with the removable post 6 creates a linearly interlinked modular barrier when two or more units are longtitudinaly aligned.
The tolerancing of the post and slots together with the chamfer angle 7 permits some angular displacement in all planes to accomodate bearing surface undulations and linear curving of the barrier.
To permit handling of the unit, slots 2, 3 and 5 are - constructed into the structure such that fork lift mechanical handling or slinging may be employed. Slot 3 also permits water to pass from one side of the barrier to the other and slot 5 is sized to straddle protuberances in the bearing surface such as road lane reflectors.
The cross sectional shape 4 is such as to deflect glancing side impacts and buttress the vertical element of the barrier. Each unit can accomodate light reflectors 8 attached where convenient and can accomodate a light affixed at 6 or at an intermediate location 9 rebated into the top surface.
Claims (6)
1A steel reinforced concrete barrier with features for
interlinking two or more units to form an essentially
contiguous barrier.
2 A steel reinforced concrete barrier as claimed in claim
1 wherein chamfered end faces permit limited angular
displacement in plan view when two or more units are
abutted end to end.
3 A steel reinforced concrete barrier as claimed in claim
1 or claim 2 wherein two or more transverse slots in
the base of each unit serve to facilitate handling of
the unit and permit the flow of water on the bearing
surface to pass from one side to the other side of the
unit.
4 A steel reinforced concrete barrier as claimed in claim
1 or claim 2 or claim 3 wherein a longtitudinal slot in
the base of each unit serves to facilitate handling of
the unit and accomodates centreline protuberances from
the bearing surface such as road lane reflectors.
5 A steel reinforced concrete barrier as claimed in any
preceding claim wherein lights or light reflectors may
be affixed.
6 A steel reinforced concrete barrier substantially as
described herein with reference to Figures 1 - 4 of the
accompanying drawing.
