Abstract

A washing article is provided which has a surface provided by a net and a smoother surface provided, for example by a piece of flannel or towel material. The article may take the form of flannel, a back scrubber or a wash mitt.

Description

WASHING ARTICLE This invention relates to an article for use by a person in washing.
According to the present invention there is provided a washing article having at least one surface portion provided by a net, and at least one further surface portion which is less rough than the surface of the net.
The use of a net provides an effective scrubbing action, whilst the provision of a less rough surface portion allows the user to wash without scrubbing.
A number of embodiments of the present invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 shows a portion of an embodiment of the invention in the form of a wash flannel, showing part of one face thereof; Figure la is a section showing a detail of the flannel of Figure 1; Figure 2 shows a portion of a second embodiment of the invention, ' in the form of a back scrubber; Figure 2a shows the shape of pieces of towelling and wadding used in the embodiment of Figure 2; Figure 2b shows a net used in the embodiment of Figure 2; and Figures 3a and 3b show respectively the net and towelling used in a third embodiment of the invention, which takes the form of a wash mitt, the mitt also including wadding of the same shape; and Figures 4a, 4b and 4c show a preferred form of knot used in the net, showing, respectively, the knot being tied, the knot tied but unstretched, and the knot stretched.
Turning now to the embodiment of Figures 1 and la, this takes the form of a wash flannel 1 of which one face is provided by a piece of conventional flannel material 2, and the other face, except for an edge portion, is provided by a piece of net 3. The pieces are stitched together by lines of inner and outer stitching 4 and 5 respectively.
The inner stitching secures the net to the flannel material, whilst the outer stitching provides a neat fold, as well assisting in securing the net to the flannel.
The embodiment shown in Figures 2 and 2a takes the form of a back scrubber 10. This comprises an elongate member 11 with a ring-shaped handle 12 at each end. The elongate member 11 consists of four layers of material, which are, successfully, a first layer of towelling, a layer of wadding, a second layer of towelling and a net.
One of the layers of towelling is shown in Figure 2a, where it is denoted by reference numeral 13. The other layer of towelling and the wadding are of the same shape and dimensions. The net, which is denoted by reference numeral 14 in Figures 2 and 2b, is also of the same shape and dimensions as the towelling and wadding. The edges of the back scrub are finished with strips of edging material denoted by reference numeral 15. By way of example, the pieces of towelling, wadding and net may be 940 mm in length and 100 mm at their maximum width, but it should be emphasised that these dimensions are given by way of example only. The handles 12 are held on the ends of the elongate member by folding the material of the latter over portions of the handles, and then sewing the folded portions together.
Figure 3 shows pieces of net 20 and towelling 21 for use in making a third embodiment of the invention, which takes the form of a wash mitt. On one side, the wash mitt comprises two pieces of towelling 21 with a piece of wadding of the same shape sandwiched between them. On the other side the wash mitt has a piece of toweling 21 and the piece of net 20 sewn together, with the net facing outwardly. The two sides of the wash mitt are sewn together so as to leave an opening along the edge 22 for the user to insert a hand. To ensure that the mitt cannot too readily fall off the user's hand, the opening is elasticated, for example by sewing in a piece of stretchnylon elasticated tubing. The edges of the mitt are finished by sewing on a piece of edging material.
When a user inserts a hand into the wash mitt, it comes into contact on both sides with towelling. The mitt is thus comfortable to use. Of the two outer faces of the mitt, one is towelling, backed by wadding, and this side can be used when a scrubbing action is not required. The other side has net on its outer surface, and can be used for scrubbing.
The net used in the present invention is preferably a knotted net, and Figures 4a to 4c show one form of knot which may be used, which is known as an English single knot. The half mesh size n is preferably equal to about 9.5 mm. The material of which the net is made can conveniently be a multifilament nylon yarn 0.52 mm in diameter.
The towelling used is preferably a cotton fabric.
Where wadding is provided this can conveniently be polyester wadding having a weight of 70 or 80 g/m2.
The use of net in a washing article according to the present invention enables the user to achieve a particularly effective scrubbing action, thus removing oil and skin debris, whilst unblocking pores and promoting a healthy skin tone.
