Abstract

A holder for a pencil or crayon comprises a body (1) having a hole (2) at one end for receiving the pencil or crayon. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) the body is open at the other end (4) so that a tool can be inserted to eject the pencil or crayon. Alternatively a side opening (6) may be provided for insertion of a tool therethrough. In another embodiment (Fig. 3) the body includes a built-in ejector tool (18). <IMAGE>

Description

PENCIL HOLDER The design of this holder is particularly useful now due to the call for conservation of trees all over the world.
Many millions of pencils and crayons etc are produced each year but when they become too short they are just discarded. Up to 50% of the pencil is wasted and this pencil holder is designed to reduce this waste to a minimum.
The pencil holder is a plain piece of plastic or other suitable material approximately 3i" long (ai.hough any length will do) and shaped to fit comfortably in the hand which has a hole in at least one end to allow the insertion of a pencil. Various means can be used to ensure that the pencil does not fall out and a few of these are shown to desribe the principal.
It is also possible to put various embellishments on the design to improve its selling prospects. Improvements such as a rubber in one end of the holder or a clip to allow it to be carried in the pocket.
The average length of a pencil is 7" and the use of this holder ensures that only approximately 1" instead of 3i" of the pencil is wasted.
FIG. 1. Shows a plain stem (1) with a hole (2) at one end (3) wide enough to receive a pencil or other suitable means of drawing or writing. The depth of the hole is sufficient to hold the pencil securely and prevent it falling out. It can be used with pencils of any length but is primarily for use with the stub ends of pencils.
The pencil is pushed into the - end (2) of the holder (1) which grips it tightly making the holder an extent ion to the pencil and giving an extra 30% useful life to the pencil.
Eventually the pencil will wear down until there is only i' - left in the holder. It is for this reason that the hole (2) preferably continues right the way through the holder (1) to the other end (4). This allows a knitting needle or other such ejector (5) to be pushed in at the end (4) and pushing the stub of the pencil from the end (2).
Another method of removing the stubb end from the holder if the design did not have a hole all the way through would be to have an ejector point (6) so that the stubb end could be removed by pushing the ejector implement in through the hole (6) and levering the stub end out of the hole (2).
FIG. 2. Illustrates another method of holding the pencil or crayon and pencil is inserted in the hole (7) and the stem (8) is split at point (9). This allows easy insertion of the pencil into the end (7) and the thread (10) on the stem (8) matches the thread (11) on the nut (12). As the nut 12 is turned it moves towards the end hole (7) and pulls the two halves (13) and (14) of the stem (8) together and secures the pencil to the holder.
FIG. 3. Illustrates the pencil or crayon holder with a built in ejector. The holder (17) has a hole (15) to allow the pencil to lq be inserted and it has a holeAright through the centre to allow A the ejector (18) to be inserted. When the pencil is worn away to a stub end by pressing the ejector it quickly removes the stub of the pencil.
With reference to Fig. 2. it would also be possible to have the nut (12) just as a plain collar with no thread and no thread on the two halves (13) and (14). These two halves (13) and (14) could be tapered and the nut (12) could have a matching taper instead of a thread and to grip the pencil you would push the nut (12)/collar towards the end (7) and this would squeeze the two halves (13) and (14) together and secure the pencil in position.

CLAIMS: PENCIL HOLDER/EXTENSION
1. A pencil holder/extension that allows the insertion of a pencil or crayon made in one or more parts consisting of a stem made of plastic or other suitable material with a hole at one or both ends to accept a pencil or crayon but has an ejector hole or slot to allow the insertion of a tool to eject or remove the stub end of the pencil when it has worn down to the point it is no further practical use.
2. A pencil holder/extension that allows the insertion of a pencil or crayon as in Claim 1 but with a hole right through the centre of the holder that allows the insertion of an ejector tool to push out the stub end of the pencil or crayon when it has worn down until it is of no further practical use.
3. A pencil holder/extension as in Claim 1 and Claim 3 that is made up of one or more parts and has an ejector tool built into it to eject the pencil or crayon when it has worn down to the point of no further practical use.
4. A pencil holder or extension consisting of plastic or other suitable material with a hole in at least one end to allow the insertion of a pencil or crayon.
