Abstract
A safety modification of the gate control system of the Automatic Gate of the LRT UTS Underground Ticketing System comprises reprogramming the computer so that the commands it sends to the logic control processor as a result of information received from the beam logic system will not cause the paddles to close after a certain lapse of time but will allow them to remain open until the person passing down the aisle has broken and passed through the infra red beam (2) situated beyond the sweep of the paddles. <IMAGE>
Description
Safety modification of gate control system of Automatic Gate of LRT UTS
This invention relates to the Automatic Gate of the IRT UTS.
The Automatic Gate (AG) of the LRT Underground Ticketing System (UTS) employs a computer-based sensing and gate control system, the computer being controlled by a program and reading five beams.
There is the beam logic system (BLS), which senses people going through and the logic control processor (liCP), which uses what is sensed in the gate control. The logic control processor causes the paddles to close 15 seconds after they have opened, unless the person passing down the aisle has passed the paddles and broken the infra red light beam situated, facing forward, beyond the sweep of the paddles (the beam 2 as shown in Figure 1) and has passed through it, in which case the paddles will close after opening after a lapse of less than 15 seconds, closure beginning immediately the beam has been broken and the person has passed through it.
Whatever the position of a person in relation to the beam ( 1 as shown in Figure 1) being either in front of, breaking or moving back or into the beam, either before or after the paddles have opened, without the person moving forward into the area swept by the paddles, the paddles will close after 15 seconds.
For a person walking at normal speed, the paddles usually remain open for only 4 seconds, this being a sufficient lapse of time for the beam beyond the sweep of the paddles to be broken and the person to pass through it. However, cases have occurred of persons who through disablement, ignorance of the time available for them, the wearing of bulky clothing, the carrying of baggage or bulky objects or the narrowness of the aisles, the aisles being 19 mm narrower that the U,S. NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit
Systems, have been unable to pass through through the sweep of the paddles within 15 seconds from their opening and as a result have been entrapped or struck by the paddles. It has been experimentally proved that a person positioned within the area swept by the paddles will be struck by them after they have remained open for 15 seconds.
If a person caused the paddles to open and then decided not to pass through, an event unknown and highly unlikely, thus causing the paddles to remain open, the next person passing through, although failing to use a ticket, would cause them to close. An experiment carried out at Euston Underground Station on 19-9-89 proved this to be the case.
The invention takes the form of modifying the gate control system.
The modification of the gate control system takes the form of reprogramming the computer so that the commands it sends to the logic control processor (LOX) as a result of the information received from the beam logic system (BLS) will not cause the paddles to close after a certain lapse of time but will allow them to remain open until the person passing down the aisle has broken the infra red light beam (the beam 2 shown in Figure 1) situated beyond the sweep of the paddles and has passed through it.
Claims (2)
1 A safety modification of the gate control
system of the Automatic Gate (AG) of the LRT UTS.
2 The modification takes the form of
reprogramming the computer so that the commands
it sends to the logic control processor (LOP) as a result of information received from the
beam logic system (BLS) will not cause the
paddles to close after a certain lapse of time
but will allow them to remain open until the
person passing down the aisle has broken the
infra red beam (the beam shown in Figure 1 of
the accompanying drawings) situated beyond the
sweep of the paddles and has passed through it.
