Description

Description of Invention "Improvements in or relating to packaging" THIS INVENTION relates to improvements in or relating to packaging.
It is known to make packaging for various products by forming an open-ended tubular body from a sheet of relatively flexible material, such as transparent plastics material, and closing each end suitably shaped end cap to form a package enclosing the packaged product.
Various methods have been employed in the past to fasten the end cap to the tubular body of the package to prevent the unintended detachment of the end cap from the tubular body. For example, it has been known to secure the end cap to the tubular body by stapling an axially extending flange on the end cap to an adjacent wall of the tubular body or to use adhesive tape or the like to attach the end cap to the tubular body. It has also been proposed to form the flange on the end closure with preformed projections which snap into correspondingly preformed apertures in the wall of the tubular body to preclude inadvertent removal of the end cap from the tubular member.
The use of staples is economical and convenient, but can cause injury, particularly puncture wounds, to a person handling the package if the staple is not properly clinched. The use of pre-formed abutments on the end cap and pre-formed holes in the wall of the tubular body provides a secure and safe fastening but increases the cost of the package and this is unacceptable in appli cations where a low cost package is required.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means for fastening an end cap to the tubular body of such a package, which means is secure, safe and economical.
Accordingly, in one aspect, the present invention provides a method of making a package comprising a tubular body having an open end and an end cap having a flange and fastened to the open end of the tubular body, which method comprises the steps of: applying the end cap to the end of the tubular body with the flange thereof extending axially of the tubular body adjacent the wall of the tubular body; partially severing adjacent portions of the flange of the end cap and the wall of the tubular body and permanently deforming the partially severed adjacent portions of the flange of the end cap and the wall of the tubular body in the same direction transversely of the axis of the tubular body so that one of the deformed partially severed portions projects through an aperture left by the other of the deformed partially severed portions and thereby fastens the end cap to the tubular body.
Preferably, the method comprises partially severing and deforming the adjacent portions of the flange of the end cap and the wall of the tubular body in a single punching operation.
In one method embodying the invention, the flange of the end cap lies within the tubular body when the end cap is applied to the tubular body and the partially severed adjacent portions of the flange of the end cap and the wall of the tubular body are deformed away from the axis of the tubular body.
In another method embodying the invention, the flange of the end cap lies within the tubular body when the end cap is applied to the tubular body and the partially severed adjacent portions of the flange of the end cap and the wall of the tubular body are deformed towards the axis of the tubular body.
In a further method embodying the invention, the flange of the end cap lies outside the tubular body when the end cap is applied to the tubular body and the partially severed adjacent portions of the flange of the end cap and the wall of the tubular body are deformed towards the axis of the tubular body.
In accordance with another aspect of the invention, there is provided a package comprising a tubular body having an open end cap fastened to the tubular body to close an open end of the tubular body, the tubular body having a wall provided with a partially severed portion which is permanently deformed transversely of the axis of the tubular body, the end cap having a flange extending axially of the tubular body adjacent the wall of the tubular body and provided with a partially severed portion which is adjacent the deformed partially severed portion of the wall of the tubular body and which is permanently deformed transversely of the axis of the tubular body in the same direction as the deformed partially severed portion of the wall of tubular member, so that one of the deformed partially severed portions projects through an aperture left by the other of the deformed partially severed portions and thereby fastens the end cap to the tubular body.
According to a further aspect, the invention provides apparatus for making a package having a tubular body and an end cap fastened to the tubular body to close an open end of the tubular body, the end cap having a flange extending axially of the tubular body adjacent the wall of the tubular body, which apparatus comprises cooperating jaw members for receiving the flange and adjacent wall of the tubular body therebetween and having co-operating punch and die means for partially severing and permanently deforming adjacent portions of the flange of the end cap and the wall of the tubular body so that one of the deformed partially severed portions projects through an aperture left by the other of the deformed partially severed portions and thereby fastens the end cap to the tubular body.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood, embodiments thereof will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a tubular body and end caps used in making a package according to a first embodiment of the present invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the first embodiment of the package in the assembled condition after the end caps have been fastened to the tubular body; Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line III III of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a partial cross-sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line IV-IV of Figure 2; Figure 5 is a side view of a second embodiment of the package according to the invention; Figure 6 is a plan view of the package shown in Figure 5;; Figure 7 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view on an enlarged scale on the line VII-VII of Figure 6; Figure 8 is a plan view of a tool used in attaching the end cap to the tubular body; and Figure 9 is an end view of the tool shown in Figure 8.
A first package embodying the present invention is illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 and comprises an open-ended tubular body 1 of square cross-section and a pair of end caps 2A and 2B adapted to fit into the ends of the tubular body 1 to form a closed package.
The tubular body 1 is formed from a sheet of transparent plastics material, such as P.V.C., creased along four parallel lines to define longitudinal edges 3 of side walls 5 when the sheet is formed into the tubular body 1 by overlapping and bonding together opposite edge portions of the sheet, so as to form a longitudinal seam The end caps 2A and 2B are injection moulded from an opaque plastics material, such as polythene. Each cap comprises a square base 6 formed with a peripheral flange 7 extending substantially perpendicular to the base 6 and provided with a peripheral lip 8 extending substantially parallel to the base 6 and projecting outwardly from the flange 7.
As shown in Figures 2 to 4 each cap 2A, 2B is adapted to fit snugly into an end of the tubular body 1, the cap being inserted into the tubular body until the end of the tubular body comes into abutment with the lip 8 of the cap 2A, 2B. In this inserted position of the end cap 2A or 2B, each side of the flange 7 lies adjacent an end region of a corresponding side wall 5 of the tubular body 1.To fasten the end cap 2A, 2B in the tubular body 1 in order to prevent unintentional detachment of the inserted end cap, adjacent portions 11 and 12 of the flange 7 and the adjacent wall 5 of the tubular body 1 at a plurality of locations around the periphery of the body are partially severed and permanently deformed transversely of the longitudinal axis of the tubular body 1 using the tool illustrated in Figures 8 and 9, thereby forming connections 14 securing the end cap 2A, 2B against inadvertent axial withdrawal from the end of the tubular body 1.
As shown in Figures 8 and 9, the tool 20 comprises a pair of arms 17 and 18 pivotally interconnected intermediate their ends by pivot 19. The arms 17 and 18 have handle portions 21 and 22 on one side of the pivot 19 and working portions 23 and 24 on the other side of the pivot 19. The working portions 23 and 24 carry a punch head 25 and a die head 26 respectively. The heads 25 and 26 are normally biased into the disengaged position of Figure 8 by a return spring 27 disposed between the handle portions 21 and 22 and may be brought together against the action of the spring 27 by squeezing the handle portions 21 and 22 together. The punch head 25 is formed with a projecting punch blade 30 of arcuate shape in plan view and of uniform thickness. The die head 26 is formed with a corresponding rectangular recess 31 into which the punch blade is driven upon operation of the tool 20.
To use tool 20 to form a connection between the flange 7 of the end cap 2A, 2B and the adjacent wall 5 of the tubular body 1, the flange and adjacent wall of the tubular body 1 are introduced between the separated heads 25 and 26 of the tool 20 with the punch head proximate the flange 7 of the end cap and the die head 26 proximate the side wall of the tubular body 1 and the handle portions 21 and 22 of the tool are squeezed together to force the heads 25 and 26 together, so as to drive the punch blade 30 into the recess 31.The result of this action is to partially sever adjacent strip-like portions 11, 12 of the flange 7 and the wall of the tubular body 1 and to permanently deform such striplike portions transversely of the axis of the tubular body 1, so that they bow outwardly away from the axis of the body 1, thereby leaving corresponding apertures 32, 33 in the flange 7 and wall 5. The deformed portion 11 of the flange 7 projects through the aperture 33 formed in the wall 5 of the tubular body 1 and thus resists withdrawal of the end cap 2A, 2B axially from the tubular body.
In the example illustrated, two connections 14 are formed between each side of the flange 7 and the adjacent side wall 5 of the tubular body 1.
Figures 5 to 7 illustrate a second package embodying the present invention which comprises a transparent tubular body 51 of circular cross-section and a pair of transparent circular end caps 52A and 52B.
The tubular body 51 may be a sheet of suitable plastics material, such as P.V.C, formed into a cylinder with overlapping edges which are bonded together to form a longitudinal seam (not shown).
Each end cap 52A, 52B is thermo formed from the same material as the body 51 and comprises a base 56 formed with a U-shaped peripheral flange 53 having an inner cylindrical flange wall 57 connected by a peripheral lip 58 to an outer cylindrical flange wall 59.
An end portion of the tubular body 51 is snugly received in a channel 60 of the flange 53 when the end cap is applied to the tubular body 51. A central frusto-conical protuberance 61 projects from the base 56 within the flange 53.
Each end cap 52A, 52B is secured to the tubular body 51 at four spaced apart locations around the circumference of the end cap by connections 62 formed between the end cap 52A, 52B and the tubular body 51 using the tool 20.
In order to form a connection 62, the flange 53 containing the end portion of the tubular body 51 is positioned between the heads 25 and 26 of the tool 20 with the punch head 25 radially outside the flange 53 and the die head 26 radially within the flange 53. The tool 20 is then operated to drive the punch blade 30 into the die recess 31. As a result, adjacent strip-like portions 63, 64 and 65 of the outer flange wall 59, the tubular body 51 and the inner flange wall 57 are partially severed and deformed radially inwardly towards the axis of the tubular body 51, leaving corresponding rectangular apertures 66, 67 and 68 in the material of the flange wall 59, tubular body 51 and flange wall 57.The resulting bow-shaped deformed portion 63 of the flange wall 59 extends through the apertures 67, 68 left in the tubular body 60 and the flange wall 57, while the deformed portion 67 of the tubular body 51 extends through the aperture 68 in the flange wall 57, thereby securing the end cap against unintended removal from the tubular body 51.
It will be appreciated that, although the exemplary packages described by way of example with reference to the drawings have a particular cross-sectional shape and size, the invention is applicable to packages of any shape and size.
Moreover, whilst the exemplary packages employ caps made of P.V.C. and polyethylene, it will be appreciated that the invention is applicable to packages having caps made of other material.
Although the tool described by way of example with reference to Figures 8 and 9 is a hand tool in which the co-operating punch head and die head are provided on respective ones of a pair of pivotally interconnected arm, it is envisaged that the tool could be of any suitable kind in which a punch head and die head are brought together manually or automatically by appropriate motive means.
Whilst in the embodiment of Figures 1 to 4 the fixing of the end caps 2A, 2B to the tubular body 1 is described as being effected by deformation of the partially severed portions 11 and 12 away from the axis of the tubular body 1 so that the portion 11 of the flange 7 projects through an aperture left in the wall 5 by portion 12, the portions 11 and 12 could equally be deformed towards the axis of the tubular body 1 by using the tool 20 in a reversed orientation so that the portion 12 of the wall 5 projects through an aperture left in flange 7 by portion 11.
Similarly, in the embodiment of Figures 5 to 7, the tool 20 could be used in a reversed orientation so that the portions 63, 64 and 65 are deformed outwardly away from the axis of the tubular body 51 instead of inwardly towards the axis of the body 51 as illustrated in Figures 5 to 7.
