Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CONTROL
OR HAZARD WARNING DEVICES
This invention relates to control or hazard warning devices.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided an elongate structure for mounting on and extending upwardly from a control or hazard warning device and comprising a light-reflective element.
The element may extend around the structure.
The element may be adjacent the top of the structure.
The element may comprise a lower tapered portion for mounting on a road cone.
The invention also provides a road cone having such a structure mounted thereon.
The invention further provides a control or hazard warning device comprising an upwardly extending lower part and, mounted thereon, a separate upwardly extending upper part, the upper part comprising such a structure.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one specific embodiment with possible modifications will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings, in which: Pig. 1 is a side view of a barrier;
Pig. 2 is an enlarged view of part of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 shows a modification;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of part of Pig. 1;
Pigs. 5, 6 are top and underneath plan views of
Fig. 4; and
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the top of Fig. 3.
A barrier 10 comprises a flexible length of mesh material 11 held at spaced locations therealong by structures 12. Each structure 12 comprises a hazard warning device in the form of a so-called road cone 13 comprising a base 14 and an upwardly extending upper part 15 which typically carries a sleeve 15a of lightreflecting material. The base and upper part may take various shapes. In use the base rests on the ground 16 or the like. The cones are stackable. The base 14 may be integral with or separate from the part 15. There may be two or more structures 12.
The cone in the present case is optionally formed with an anchorage or locating device for the mesh 11.
For example, as shown, an aperture 17 is formed in the wall 18 of the cone to provide a flexible tongue 19 which can be bent out from the cone wall so as to allow a strand 20 of the mesh to be located and held behind the tongue 19. The aperture 17 could be formed during moulding of the plastics cone or subsequently and could be in the base.
An extension 25 for the cone is double-tapered and has a lower portion 26 engaged on the top of the cone part 15 and an upper part 27 provided at or near its upper end with an anchorage 28 for the mesh 11.
Thus as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, the top of part 27 may be formed with a recess in the for of a cross 28 providing orthogonal recesses in which a strand of the mesh can be engaged.
The internal taper on portion 27 is the same as the external taper on the cone.
The upper portion of portion 27 receives a sleeve 40 of light-reflecting material adjacent or close to the top of portion 27. The structure 12 thus has upper and lower sleeves of light-reflecting material.
The sleeve 40 could be on a lower part of portion 27.
The mesh may be formed of plastics and preferably is under slight vertical tension between the anchorages on a structure 12. The height of length 11 may for example be 1 metre.
Pigs. 3 and 7 show another form of upper anchorage in the shape of a transverse cut out 30 providing a shoulder 31 behind which the mesh strand can be located and held.
The anchorages could take other forms. For example, hooks, screws or other projections could be attached to the cone 13 or part 25.
The anchorages could be shaped and disposed to engage a generally upright strand of the mesh rather than a generally horizontal strand.
The extension 25 is stackable with similar extensions. Portion 27 could be cylindrical.
The structures 12 need not be in two parts.
The barrier may be used in road blocks or around holes in the ground, for example, and is portable.
The mesh can readily be attached to or removed from the structures 12. The structures 12 can preferably be used independently of the mesh as two-part cones.
Slots 28 and apertures 17 can be omitted.
