Abstract

A fire retardant liquid compound which achieves the statutory level of fire retardancy in upholstery and mattress fabrics without detriment to the fabrics involved. The compound is applied by spray or foam achieving impregnation into the fibres without damage to the face of the material, and without affecting its handling, feel, tensile strength and colour stability. The liquid contains mono ammonium phosphate, antimony trioxide decabromodiphenyl oxide, and haloflex (vinyl acrylic copolymers).

Description

FIRE RETARDANT LIQUID COMPOUND.
A.
This invent ton relates to a fire retardant liquid compound which achieves a level of fire retardanoy in:- (a) upholstery fabrics previously mater soaked according to British Standard 5651 to the standard required in British Standard 5852, and (b) mattress fabrics previously water soaked according to British Standard 5651 to the standard required in British Standard 6807.
The need for this new product arises both from the obligatory requirement to accord with these standards from 1st. March 1990 and the fact that there is no product available that aohieves these standards without detriment to the fabrics involved. The compound represents an inventive step in what will be a compulsory and new governmental requirement.
The compound is applied by spray o foam achieving impregnation into the fibres uniquely without dYge to the face of the material, and without affecting its handling, feel, tensile strength and colour stability. After treatioent, again uniquely, the fabric needs no curing.
The compound is a solution of four ingredients mixed proportionately by weight within the following parameters:- Water ... ... . . . . . . ... 4L Mono-amonium phosphate (tech) ... 5 to 15 Haloflex - E.P. 563 (I.C.I.).. 2.5 to 7.5 Antimony trioxide deoabromodiphenyl oxide 30 to 50 To mix the solution, the water is charged and heated to 25 degrees Celsius: the phosphate crz8talss , are then added and dissolved. then the final two ingredients are added whilst stirring.
The liquid is converted into foam by adding to the above formulation proportionate weights within the stated parameters of:- Parameter Hydroxy ethyl oelluloae 5 to 2.5 Sodium lauryl sulphate 1.6 to 3 The precise mixture of solution needed for a given length of fabric depends on the fabric's weight and the required degree of fire retardancy which on occasions may aim to exceed the British Standard.
The correct application is resolved by testing a sample of fabric before treating the whole.
The need for a different level of viscosity of the solution may arises Thickemling can be achieved by the addition of Visoolex AT 77 on the basis of 1 part AT 77 by weight to 20 of the formulation. This is added with the water in the initial preparation so avoiding rub with the latices. This needs to be stirred for two minutes so as to achieve a flat rology.
