Abstract

A panel board comprises of two outer skins 13, 14 between which is sandwiched a bamboo core 12 bonded thereto with adhesive. The bamboo core comprises a plurality of juxtaposed longitudinally cut bamboo sections. The outer skins may be hardboard, ply or bamboo woven board. <IMAGE>

Description

Title BAMBOO CORE BOARD The present invention concerns improvements in panel boards for use in the building industry.
In recent years the number of timber forests have been severely depleted either through natural causes or the requirements of modern day living. Accordingly, it has been necessary either to use an alternate form of building material or to plant fast growing timber. Unfortunately, most fast growing timber does not have the necessary strength to form suitable panel boarding.
It is an object of the invention to provide a type of panel board which is simple to produce and therefore of low cost, and one that is visually versitile so as to blend into existing local cultural styles.
Bamboo has been proposed and found to have the necessary qualities, such as pleasing appearance, cheapness, fast growing and and having satisfactory properties of rigidity and strength.
Bamboo is indigenous to central America, Africa and many parts of Asia as far as the north of the Himalayas. It grows relatively fast and has a suitable elasticity, strength and hardness after three years. It is therefore quickly replaceable.
According to the present invention a panel board comprises two outer skins between which is sandwiched a bamboo core bonded thereto with adhesive, such a composite structure offers high stiffness and strength with low weight.
Also according to the present invention the production of such a panel board comprises the steps of cutting seasoned bamboo culm into standard lengths, sorting the cut lengths, cutting the bamboo lengths longitudinally to the required thickness, subsequentially laying cut bamboo lengths, of equal thickness, in juxtaposition onto a first skin lining the nodes of the bamboo lengths to the centre of the internodes of the next so forming a uniform bamboo core structure, applying adhesive onto the underside of the bamboo core or onto the skin or to both before bonding together, and applying a second skin over the top side of the bamboo core, similarly glued, thus forming a sandwich with the bamboo core at the centre.
The longitudinal cutting of the bamboo culm can be effected by a single saw, by feeding the material into a cutting device comprising a plurality of equidistantly arranged circular saw blades or any other similar method with the same result such as laser.
The invention will now be described further, by way of example, with reference to accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. 1 shows diagrammatically, the steps in the production of a building panel according to the invention; Fig. 2 show a detail of a typical cutting installation, in this case a multi saw arrangement; Fig. 3 shows a plurality of sections of bamboo cut from a single culm; Fig. 4A shows an exploded detail of a single bamboo core panel board; Fig. 4B shows an exploded detail of a double bamboo core panel board; and Fig. 4C shows an exploded detail of a multi-layer bamboo core panel board.
Fig. 1 shows one form of production of a panel board step by step and is self-explanatory.
In Fig. 2 there is shown one form of cutting of a bamboo culm 10 by means of a plurality of circular saw blades 11, juxtaposed blades being set equidistantly one from the other. Culm 10 is fed to the cutting blades 11 in the direction of the arrow W.
Fig 3 shows a plurality of cut lengths 12 all being from one bamboo cuim 19, of equal thickness.
A single core panel is shown in Fig. 4A comprising a first skin 13, which may be made of any suitable material such as hardboard, ply or bamboo woven board. A core of bamboo sections 12 is applied to the first skin 13 and then a second skin 14 is the applied over the bamboo sections 12. The second skin 14 may be of the same material as the first but can be of any other suitable materiai, for example if a different surface finish is required. Adhesive can be applied onto the upper surface of the skin 13 before the core is emplaced or it can be applied after adhesive is applied to the upper surface of the bamboo sections 12 and the second skin 14 is layed theron, or both.
A double core panel board is shown in Fig. 4B. The construction and materials may be similar to that described with respect to Fig. 4a. There is a lower skin 13, a core 12, an intermediate skin 15, a second bamboo core 12a, the sections of which are arranged at right angle or.. any other angle to the sections of the core 12, finally there is a top skin 14.
A multi-core panel board is shown in Fig 4c. Again the cores 12, 12a, 12b and 12c are at right angle or any angle to each adjacent core. Intermediate skins 15a, 15b, and 15c are arranged between each set of cores.
