Abstract
Video apparatus (2) comprising a housing (6) and first and second reception areas (8, 10) for receiving first and second video cassettes (9,11), the video apparatus (2) being such as to allow video recordings to be made on both the first and/or the second video cassettes (9, 11). The apparatus may form part of a television receiver and means may be included to prevent cassette to cassette copying.
Description
VIDEO APPARATUS
This invention relates to video apparatus.
Video apparatus is well known. There are various different types of video apparatus and they are all of advanced technical construction. However, for some unknown reason, whilst considerable technical advances have been made in the different types of video apparatus, they are all deficient in one particular area and this is in the use of twin video cassettes.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned deficiency.
Accordingly, this invention provides video apparatus comprising a housing and first and second reception areas for receiving first and second video cassettes, the video apparatus being such as to allow video recordings to be made on both the first and/or the second video cassettes.
The video apparatus of the present invention may be one which is solely for recording for the purposes of producing video cassettes. Such video apparatus will mainly be for commercial use for producing video cassettes for sale. With such commercial use, the same programme information will usually be recorded on both the first and the second video cassettes. The recordings will usually be effected from a master machine. If desired however the recordings can also be effected from television apparatus. Also if desired, separate programmes can be recorded on the first and the second video cassettes.
The video apparatus may include playback means for playing back video cassettes so that programme information recorded thereon can be used.
With video apparatus including the playback means, the video apparatus may be used in the above mentioned commercial application to conduct spot checks on the visual and sound quality of video recordings being made.
When the video apparatus includes the playback means, it is envisaged that the video apparatus will mainly be used for private use in homes so that persons recording programmes will then be able to watch on the video apparatus what they have recorded.
The playback means may be such as to allow the first and/or the second video cassettes to be played back for viewing from the first and/or the second reception areas. Thus, the video apparatus with the playback means may be such that only the first reception area is provided with the playback means, or such that only the second reception area is provided with the playback means, or such that both the first and the second reception areas are provided with the playback means.
The video apparatus may include means for enabling the video apparatus to be used with television apparatus, whereby video cassette recording and watching video cassette programmes on the television apparatus can take place simultaneously. It is envisaged that this type of video apparatus will usually be used by individuals in homes.
Where the video apparatus includes the means for enabling the video apparatus to be used with the television apparatus, then the first and/or the second reception areas may be associated with video cassette viewing means for enabling a recorded programme to be watched on the television apparatus. Thus only the first reception area may be associated with the cassette viewing means, or only the second reception area may be associated with the cassette viewing means, or both the first and the second reception areas may be associated with the cassette viewing means.
The video apparatus may include recording prevention means for preventing cassette to cassette copying. Such recording prevention means may be required in order to comply with copyright laws.
The video apparatus may be produced as a separate unit for connection by one or more cables to a separate television. Alternatively, the video apparatus may be combined with a television and with such combined apparatus, the apparatus will be referred to herein as video apparatus although it will be appreciated that the combined apparatus could be referred to as a television with built-in video apparatus.
When recording television programmes, the recording may be effected by the current BBC or ITV broadcasts or from the more recently introduced satellite broadcasts.
If desired, the video apparatus may have three or more of the reception areas for receiving three or more of the video cassettes for the same purpose as stated above for the first and the second video cassettes.
The video cassettes will usually be separately purchased from the video apparatus although they may be purchased with the video apparatus if desired.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front view of video apparatus;
Figure 2 is a view of part of the video apparatus shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a top plan view showing the inside of the video apparatus shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a rear view of the video apparatus shown in Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown video apparatus 2 having a front face 4 as shown in Figure 1.
The front face 4 forms part of a housing 6. The video apparatus 2 has a first reception area 8 for receiving a first video cassette 9 and a second reception area 10 for receiving a second video cassette 11 (see Figure 3).
The video apparatus 2 is such as to allow video recordings to be made simultaneously on both the first and the second video cassettes.
The front face 4 has a first set of operating buttons 12 which are associated with the first reception area 8. The first set of operating buttons 12, as shown, comprises an eject button, a rewind button, a play button, a forward button, a stop button, and a record button. The video apparatus 2 also has a second set of operating buttons 14 associated with the second reception area 10. As shown, the second set of operating buttons 14 comprises an eject button, a rewind button, a play button, a forward button, and a stop button.
It will thus be appreciated that the first set of buttons 12 additionally has a record button so that the first reception area 8 has a record facility for enabling a first video cassette in the first reception area 8 to record, whilst a second video cassette in the second reception area 10 is playing back on a television.
The video apparatus 2 has timer/programme means 16 which includes a first part 18 having a 24 hour clock and counter display, and a second part 20 having a programme selector, a seven day timer, and a channel display.
The front face 4 has a pull down cover 22 which hides an instrument panel 24 as shown in Figure 2. The various different instruments on the instrument panel 24 are as shown in Figure 2 and they are standard type of instruments that can be found on known video apparatus.
Referring to Figure 3, the inside of the video apparatus 2 is shown. The part 26 represents a main circuit board for all the video equipment, plus the required remote control circuit equipment for remote operation of the video apparatus 2, plus a tuner circuit board. The video apparatus 2 has two electric motors 28 for providing drive power for the video cassettes 9 and 11. The video apparatus 2 further has mechanical parts 30, 32, video tape heads 34 and wires 36 for connecting the various parts together as shown. Circuit boards 38 are provided for the video tape heads 34, the electric motors 28, and the mechanical parts 30, 32.
A device 40 is also provided for providing a video output, a TV input, a Euro input, an A.C. input for mains and a tuner circuit board.
Referring to Figure 4, there is shown a rear face 40 of the video apparatus 2. This rear face 40 comprises a video output socket 42, a TV input socket 44, an A.C. input socket 46 for the mains electricity, a Euro lead input 48, and a trimmer button 50.
The video apparatus 2 apart from having the twin video cassette facility may operate with standard parts so that it is not necessary to describe in detail the precise construction and operation of each of the various parts of the video cassette apparatus. Apart from the twin cassette facility, such parts will be standard parts as used in existing video apparatus.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the video apparatus 2 may be such as to afford twin recordings and/or twin playbacks via separate television apparatus. Further, the video apparatus 2 may form part of television apparatus.
