Abstract

223,451. Norman, E. P. Jan. 14, 1924. Disc-supported-blade pumps; balancing moving parts; casings.-A compression or vacuum pump has a number of rotor discs with blades on their side faces alternating with fixed blades on the casing to guide the fluid in a radial direction; the complete pump casing is divided into separate chambers and each chamber is divided into cells by stationary members extending between the rotor discs. The apparatus may be used as a turbine. The cylindrical casing 1 has an internal flange 4 at one end against which rests the end plate 6; the other end is closed by the plate 7 secured by nuts 8 on the casing screws 9. The shaft 16 is supported in ball-bearing members 21, one being screwed into the end plate 6, the other being able. to slide in the end plate 7. A disc 18 is screwed on the shaft and bears against the plate 7 to prevent axial movement in one direction and the nut 23 prevents movement in the other direction. The rotor discs 13 are keyed on the shaft and are held tightly by the nut 14. Rings 33 are arranged in the casing and have annular tongues 34 arranged in the spaces between the discs 13. Vanes 36 on the rotor discs alternate with vanes 37 on the tongues 34, the vanes near the periphery of the discs having a greater inclination to the radial line than those near the centre. The vanes shown in Figs. 7 and 8 are designed for turbines and those shown in Figs. 6, 9, 10, and 11 for compression or vacuum pumps. The casing is divided into three compartments by rotary partitions 38 provided with concentric ridges 41, Fig. 5, which mesh with annular grooves in the stationary members 43. Suitable packing is placed in the grooves. The fluid enters the pipe 52 and passes through the first two compartments in parallel to the pipe 59, thence it passes to the pipe 61 and the third compartment, leaving by the discharge pipe 63. In each compartment the rotor discs decrease in diameter in the direction of flow, and the fluid may be cooled by any appropriate means.
