Abstract
A glass container has a tamper-proof security closure to prevent malicious contamination of food within.
Description
"container" This invention relates to a container; in particular to a container having a security closure for glass vessels used in the food industry.
When dealing with foodstuffs, it is desirable to have a tamper-proof seal on the food container to prevent deliberate contamination of the contents. This is particularly important for manufacturers of baby foods for obvious reasons. However, the traditional presentation of baby food in small glass jars precludes the use of many of the standard methods of sealing food inside containers.
According to the present invention there is provided a container comprising a glass vessel having an access opening bounded by a rim, and a closure member, the closure member being fixedly secured to the rim, the closure member being rupturable to gain access to the access opening of the vessel whereby visible evidence of the container having been opened is afforded, and the closure member having means for engagement with a removable lid.
Preferably said closure member is a metal member comprising a flange portion secured to the rim and bounding a substantially planar portion disposed across the access opening.
Said planar portion may be opened with a standard tin opener. Alternatively, said planar portion may be openable along a weakened line by means of a ring-pull system or a tag.
Preferably said flange portion is secured to the rim by means of adhesive bonding.
The closure member may be wholly or partially made of plastics materials as an alternative to metal.
Preferably said means for engagement are provided by an outwardly extending lip on the closure member which engages with a resilient lip on the lid.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows a side sectional view of a
container according to the present
invention; and
Fig. 2 show a plan view of the container
of Fig. 2.
A container 1 comprises a glass vessel 2 having a metal lid 3 secured to its rim 4. The lid 3 is permanently bonded to the rim 4 so that any attempt at removal of the lid 3 would destroy or disfigure its shape, and be immediately obvious. This bonding may be achieved by the use of a strong adhesive. A device (not shown) is used during manufacture which applies the glue whilst rotating the jar on the assembly line. The lid 3 has an annular indentation 5 which is rupturable by lifting the ring-pull 6 to gain access to the vessel 2 and a plastic removable cap 7 is provided which fits over the lip 3a on the vessel 2, for use once the centre of the lid 3 has been removed.
The invention thus provides an effective means of preventing food being tampered with after leaving the factory.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
Claims (8)
1 A container comprises a glass vessel having an
access opening bounded by a rim, and a closure
member, the closure member being fixedly secured to
the rim, the closure member being rupturable to gain
access to the access opening of the vessel whereby
visible evidence of the container having been opened
is afforded, and the closure member having means for
engagement with a removable lid.
2 A container as claimed in Claim 1 wherein said means
for engagement are provided by an outwardly
extending lip on the closure member which engages
with a resilient lip on the lid.
3 A container as claimed in Claims 1 or 2 wherein
said closure member is a metal member comprising a
flange portion secured to the rim and bounding a
substantially planar portion disposed across the
access opening.
4 A container as claimed in Claim 3 wherein said
planar portion is openable with a standard
tin opener.
5 A container as claimed in Claim 3 wherein said
planar portion is openable along a weakened line by
means of a ring-pull system or a tag.
6 A container as claimed in Claim 3 wherein the
closure member is wholly or partially made
of plastics materials.
7 A container as claimed in any preceeding Claim
wherein said flange portion is secured to the rim by
means of adhesive bonding.
8 A container substantially as hereinbefore described
with reference to the drawings.
