Abstract

A personal organiser 10 comprises a backing 12 such as leather folder and a binder 30 such as a metal ring binder, with a spine of the backing being provided with a strip of Velcro (RTM) fabric 16 and a rear surface of the binder being provided with a strip of Velcro hooks 32 to allow the binder to be detachably securable to the backing, thereby facilitating insertion of an end flap of a book through a slit-like mouth 18 of a pocket provided between superimposed layers of the backing. <IMAGE>

Description

PERSONAL ORGANISERS The present invention relates to what have become known as personal organisers.
In recent years, instead of having separate diaries, name and address books, note books and the like, they have been held together in a backing by a binder. The backing is typically a leather folder provided with a press-stud fastening. The binder is typically a metal ring binder allowing the reference or other documents to be removed or replaced. However, the presence cf the binder itself may not always be desirable. It may instead be desirable to be able to use the personal organiser as a jacket for the protection of a bulkier article such as a book.
According to the present invention a personal organiser comprises a backing and a binder in which the binder is detachably secured to the backing.
The detachable connection between the backing and the binder is preferably provided by strips of Velcro (RTM).
To assist in the retention of a book, after the binder has been detached, the backing may present one or a pair of pockets into which one or both end flaps of the book can be inserted. Indeed, the general arrangement may be such that, although it is desirable to be able to detach the binder to facilitate insertion of an end flap of a book into a pocket, there might be room for the binder to be replaced after the end flap of the book has been inserted into the pocket.
In a particularly preferred arrangement, the backing has a much wider spine than is usual. The width of the spine may be 6 cm. A strip of Velcro (fabric) may extend longitudinally of the spine having been secured thereto by stitching and another strip of Velcro (hooks) may extend longitudinally of the binder having been secured thereto by adhesive. The binder can thus be readily removed from or replaced in the backing merely by manipulation.
As is usual in pockets for other purposes, the or each pocket for receiving an end flap of a book may be provided between superimposed layers of the backing. To resist looseness of the book within the pocket, the mouth of the pocket may itself be capable of being detachably secured into an at least partially closed position, for example by the provision in the mouth of the pocket of further strips of Velcro. A book of large dimensions which completely fills the mouth of the pocket would act to hold the strips of Velcro apart from one another.
However, a smaller book could be held in position by closing that or those parts of the mouth not traversed by the book, thereby effectively making a smaller mouth.
Alternatives to Velcro could be press-studs or lacing.
The backing may be provided with an additional binder for retaining reference or other documents and said additional binder may if desired also be detachably secured to the backing.
Naturally, the backing may also be arranged to provide all of the usual facilities, such as a pen loop, strap fastener and purse as well as pockets specifically designed for the reception of stamps, credit cards and a cheque book A personal organiser according to the present invention is shown, by way of example only, in the accompanying drawing which is an opened plan view of the backing after the binder has been removed.
The personal organiser 10 shown in the accompanying drawing includes a backing 12 in the form of a leather folder. The backing 12 has a particularly wide spine 14 provided with a central strip of Velcro 16. The right hand side of the backing 12 is provided with a pocket having a slit-like mouth 18 which extends parallel to the spine 14 and is capable of receiving an end flap of a book. The inside of the slit-like mouth 18 for the pocket is provided with further strips of Velcro indicated in dotted outline at 20 to enable a smaller book to be securely retained therein. The left hand side of the backing 12 is provided with a further pocket 22 intended to receive an end flap of a cheque book through slit 24. It will be noted that a conventional pen loop 26 is provided as well as a conventional fastening strap 28. A conventional ring binder 30 is shown provided on its rear surface with a strip of Velcro 32 to allow it to be detachably securable to the complementary strip of Velcro 16 provided by the backing 12.
