Abstract
A puzzle device comprises a frame-like cruciform member 12 which is open at one vertical end, a "U" shaped member 14 hingedly attached to the open end, and a main hoop 16. A puzzle is formed by combining the device and a second hoop 26. The object of the puzzle is to place the second hoop 26 on the device such that it encompasses at least the "U" shaped member 14. The second hoop 26 is impeded from being removed from the device, once placed thereon, by the main hoop 16 or by first and second horizontally extending arms 18, 20 of the cruciform member. The diameter of the second hoop is less than the diameter of the main hoop. Placing the second hoop on the device, or alternatively removing it therefrom, requires careful manipulation of both hoops in cooperation with the hingeable "U" shaped member and cruciform member. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO PUZZLES
This invention relates to puzzles and more particularly to puzzles of the metal frame type.
Puzzles made from metal frame or like materials and which comprise more than one removable part are well known. The object of such puzzles is to separate and/or place together the removable parts of the puzzle without "forcing" said parts or causing damage to said parts. The methods of achieving this are not normally immediately apparent.
According to the present invention there is provided a device comprising a frame forming a cruciform member open at one end, a "U" shaped member hingedly attached to said open end and a main hoop which interlinks with the cruciform member or the "U" shaped member.
Preferably the "U" shaped member can be accommodated within the cruciform member.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a puzzle comprising a device as defined in the second preceding paragraph and a second hoop cooperable with said device, the object of the puzzle being to locate the second hoop on the device such that it encompasses the "U" shaped member and is impeded from removal from the device by first and second horizontal arms of the cruciform member or by the main hoop.
Similarly, it is an object of the puzzle to remove said second hoop from said device when placed thereon.
Preferably the second hoop is of a smaller diameter to the main hoop.
Preferably the distance from the root of the first horizontal arm to the bight of the secona horizontal arm of the cruciform member is greater than the diameter of the second hoop.
Preferably also, the distance from the root of the second horizontal arm to the bight of the first horizontal arm of the cruciform member is greater than the diameter of the second hoop.
Preferably also, when the "U" shaped member is accommodated within the cruciform member the distance from the inside of a first leg of the "U" shaped member to the bight of the first horizontal arm of the cruciform member is less than the diameter of the second hoop.
Preferably also, when the "U" shaped member is accommodated within the cruciform member, the distance from the inside of a second leg of the "U" shaped member to the bight of the second horizontal arm of the cruciform member is less than the diameter of the second hoop.
Preferably further, when the "U" shaped member is accommodated within the cruciform member, the distance from the inside of the bight of the "U" shaped member to the bight of the first vertical arm of the cruciform member is less than the diameter of the second hoop.
The puzzle may be provided with more than one second hoop.
The foregoing and following features of the present invention will be more readily understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the device;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the puzzle comprised of the device of figure 1 and a second hoop; and Figure 3 is a plan view of the device showing the "U" shaped member accommodated within the cruciform member.
Referring to the drawings, figure 1 shows a device 10 of rod construction comprising a cruciform member 12, a "U" shaped member 14 and a main hoop 16.
The cruciform member 12 has a first horizontal arm 18, a second horizontal arm 20, a first vertical arm 22 and a second vertical arm 24.
The second vertical arm 24 is open-ended and hingedly attached thereto is the "U" shaped member 14.
The main hoop 16 interlinks with the cruciform member 12 or the "U" shaped member 14 and is freely slidable around the perimeter of the device 10.
A second hoop 26 is provided in cooperation with the device 10 to form a puzzle 28 (figure 2). The object of the puzzle 28 is to place the second hoop 26 on the device 10 such that said second hoop 26 encompasses the "U" shaped member 14 (figure 2) and such that it is impeded from being removed from said device 10 by the first and second horizontal arms 18, 20 of the cruciform member 12 or by the main hoop 16.
To achieve this it is necessary to pivot the "U" shaped member 14 until it is accommodated within the cruciform member 12. By stealthily manipulating the second hoop 26 in cooperation with the main hoop 16, the second hoop 26 can be positioned such that when the "U" shaped member 14 is pivoted away from the cruciform member 12 the second hoop 26 will then encompass said "U" shaped member 14 and be impeded from removal from the device 10 by the first and second horizontal arms 18, 20 of the cruciform member 12 or by the main hoop 16.
Similarly it is an object of the puzzle to achieve the reverse of this procedure.
The diameter of the main hoop 16 is greater than the diameter of the second hoop 26.
The distance A, as shown in figure 2, from the root of the first horizontal arm 18 to the bight of the second horizontal arm 20 of the cruciform member 12 is greater than the diameter of the second hoop 26.
Similarly, the distance B, as shown in figure 2, from the root of the second horizontal arm 20 to the bight of the first horizontal arm 18 of the cruciform member 12 is greater than the diameter of the second hoop 26.
The "U" shaped member 14 can be accommodated within the cruciform member 12 (figure 3). The distance C, as showm in figure 3, from the inside of first leg 30 of the "U" shaped member 14 to the bight of the first horizontal arm 18 of the cruciform member is less than the diameter of the second hoop 26. Similarly, the distance D, as shown in figure 3, from the inside of a second leg 32 of the "U" shaped member 14 to the bight of the second horizontal arm 20 of the crucifurm member 12 is less than the diameter of the second hoop 26.
The distance E, as shown in figure 3, from the inside of the bight of the "U" shaped member 14 to the bight of the cruciform member 12 is less than the diameter of the second hoop 26.
In this embodiment the first horizontal arm 18 of the cruciform member 12 is shown to be of the same length as the second horizontal arm 20. This need not always be the case provided the distance from the root of one horizontal arm to the bight of the opposing horizontal arm remains greater than the diameter of the second hoop.
Similarly, the "U" shaped member, in not shown embodiments, may not accommodate within the cruciform member.
