Abstract

A wheelchair is constructed to withstand the forces expected to arise from a collision when the wheelchair is in use in the vehicle. The framework 1 is provided with marks which identify the appropriate securing points at which the wheelchair can be attached to the floor of a vehicle, by means of straps or clamps. The wheelchair incorporates, or has the provision for the addition of, an occupant restraint 3 securely attached to the framework. <IMAGE>

Description

IMPACT RESISTANT WHEELCHAIR This invention relates to a wheelchair which when in use as a Public Service Vehicle seat can withstand the forces expected to arise from a collision.
Wheelchairs are well known mobility aids which comprise of a wheeled framework upon which a seat is mounted. Where access to public service vehicles is possible and transfer to an existing vehicle seat is restricted, the wheelchair occupant frequently remains seated in their wheelchair. Securing systems, which can withstand the forces produced by a vehicle collision, are available to allow the wheelchair to be fastened to the vehicle floor.
Wheelchairs are not, however, purpose-built to withstand the forces produced by a vehicular collision thus are prone to deform or collapse. Appropriate securing points are not identified on the frames of wheelchairs and the clamping systems provided in many public service vehicles are thus frequently incorrectly attached.
According to the present invention there is provided a wheelchair which when in use as a Public Service Vehicle seat is constructed to withstand the forces expected to arise from a collision, comprising of a wheeled framework and a seat.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows in front and side elevations, the wheelchair with an occupant restraint in position on the framework.
Referring to the drawing the wheelchair comprises of a wheeled framework 1, a seat 2 and incorporating or with provision for the addition of an integral occupant restraint 3, the construction of the invention which when in use as a Public Service Vehicle seat can withstand the forces expected to arise from a collision.
The wheeled framework 1 being marked in such a way as to identify the appropriate securing points at which the wheelchair can be attached to the floor of a vehicle, by means of straps or clamps (not shown).
An occupant restraint 3 being securely attached to the framework 1 by, for example a bolt or similar means (not shown) is incorporated or appropriate securing points for its addition are provided.

Claims (4)
