Abstract
A pill consuming device comprises an open-ended receptacle 11 for holding a pill 16 and a liquid suction tube 12 in communication with the receptacle. A grid or mesh 13 is preferably provided at the receptacle/tube junction to prevent passage of the pill down the tube but passage of liquid from the tube into the receptacle. <IMAGE>
Description
PILL CONSUMING DEVICE
This invention relates to a device for assisting in the swallowing of pills, tablets and capsules (hereinafter simply called "pills"),#usually medicinal in nature.
For convenience the device is hereinafter referred to as "a pill consuming device".
It is a well known fact that many people find it difficult, and sometimes impossible, to swallow pills even accompanied by the simultaneous drinking of water. In extreme cases, where it is possible, the only way some people can swallow pills is firstly to crush them into powder form.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a pill consuming device which obviates or mitigates the aforesaid difficulty.
According to the present invention there is provided a pill consuming device comprising an open-ended receptacle dimensioned to be readily accommodated within the mouth of a user and adapted to hold a pill, and an open-ended tube communicating with one open end of the receptacle and adapted to provide a flow path for a liquid into the receptacle.
By placing a pill in the receptacle, placing the free open end of the tube in, say, a glass of water and the free open end of the receptacle into the mouth, a user, upon sucking the liquid up through the tube into the receptacle, the pill is carried by the flow of water into the user's mouth and is washed down the user's gullet.
The open junction between the receptacle and the tube may be provided with a mesh or grid partition which will not impede the flow of liquid but which will prevent smallsized pills from falling down the tube.
The pill consuming device is preferably formed of a plastics material such as is used, for example, in the 5ml.
medicine spoons provided by chemists and pharmacists.
The pill consuming device is preferably disposable in nature.
The present invention also includes the use of a pill consuming device as defined in the preceding five paragraphs.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a pill consuming device according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modification; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing a pill consuming device in use.
The pill consuming device generally indicated at 10 is formed of a plastics material, usually transparent in nature, and is disposable in nature.
It comprises a thistle shaped open-ended receptacle 11 integral with an open-ended suction tube 12.
The open junction 13 between the receptacle 11 and the tube 12 may be provided with a grid or mesh partition 14 so the pill does not slide down the tube 12.
The thistle shape of the receptacle 11 facilitates the accommodation of the open-end 15 of the receptacle 11 in the mouth of a user.
Fig. 2 shows an alternative form of receptacle 11A which is of a simple open-ended frustoconical configuration.
In use a pill 16 is placed in the receptacle and the free open-end of the tube is inserted into, for example, a glass 17 containing a liquid, for example, water.
In use the user places a pill 16 in the receptacle and inserts the free open-end of the tube 12 into the water contained in glass 17.
The user then places the free open-end 15 of the receptacle 11 in his or her mouth and sucks liquid from the glass along the tube 12 into the receptacle 11 which causes the pill 16 to be carried by the flow of water into the user's mouth and to be washed down the users gullet.
As a result difficulty in swallowing pills is obviated or mitigated.
