Abstract
A method of decorating a contoured tile 10. The method comprises placing the tile 10 in register below a heat release decalcomania applicator and applying a decalcomania corresponding only to the pattern provided on the tile 10. <IMAGE>
Description
Improved Tile Decoration
This invention concerns improvements in or relating to tile decoration, and particularly but not exclusively to decorating the design on a contoured tile.
In this specification the term "contoured tile" is to be understood as referring to tiles which have a design formed in relief on their decorative surface.
Conventionally the design on a contoured tile is decorated by hand painting. This is a time consuming and laborious task, particularly if more than one colour is used in the decoration. This hand painting also normally requires the provision of a lip or rim around the design to prevent the paint from spreading onto the rest of the tile. It is not possible to decorate contoured tiles using conventional water release decalcomanias as these cannot be slid onto the tile because of the contoured design.
According to the present invention there is provided a method of decorating the design on a contoured tile, the method comprising applying a heat release decalcomania to the tile.
Preferably the decalcomania is only applied to the design and not to the whole of the tile's decorative face.
The decalcomania is preferably applied to the tile in a direction substantially perpendicular to the tile's decorative face.
The method preferably comprises holding the transfer in register on a heatable member, aligning the tile in register and spaced from said member, bringing together the member and tile and applying heat to the decalcomania to release the design layer from the backing layer, and subsequently separating the tile and member.
Preferably the tile is aligned below said member which is preferably lowered onto the tile. The backing layer is preferably held on the member as the tile and member are separated.
The tile and decalcomania may be automatically brought into register, and the tile and member may be automatically brought together and separated.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing which is a plan view of a tile, the design of which is suitable to be decorated by the method of the present invention.
The drawing shows the decorative surface of a contoured tile 10. The tile 10 has a design comprising a contoured pattern of leaves which conventionally would be painted by hand, and a rim 12 is provided around the leaves to prevent paint from spreading onto the rest of the tile. The leaves would generally be painted in two colours, a process which is likely to take in the order of 15 minutes.
Using the method of the present invention the tile 10 would be dipped in a plain colour and dried as is conventional. The tile 10 is then placed in register, for example resting against a right angled guide, below a decalcomania applicator. The applicator comprising a heatable pad movable in a vertical direction. A decalcomania is placed on the pad in register relative to the tile 10 and may be held on the pad for example by suction. The decorative layer of the decalcomania corresponds to the leaf pattern on the tile 10. The pad is then lowered onto the tile 10 and the required heat and pressure applied to ensure that the decalcomania's decorative layer separates from the backing layer and firmly adheres to the leaf pattern. The pad is then raised, preferably still holding the backing layer which can be subsequently removed. The tile is then fired.
There is thus described a method of decorating the design on contoured tiles which permits the application of a complex design which may comprise a plurality of colours which otherwise could not be hand painted. This method is relatively fast and permits the tiles to be consistently decorated. This method could be readily automated, with an automatic supply of tiles in register to the applicator, an automatic supply of decalcomanias, an automatic application of the decalcomania and removal of the decorated tiles.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the decalcomania may be applied to the tile in a different manner, perhaps with the tile being brought to the applicator rather than vice versa.
Claims (11)

2. A method according to claim 1, in which the decalcomania is only applied to the design and not to the whole of the tile's decorative face.
3. A method according to claims 1 or 2, in which the decalcomania is applied to the tile in a direction substantially perpendicular to the tile's decorative face.
4. A method according to any of claims 1 to 3, in which the method comprises holding the transfer in register on a heatable member, aligning the tile in register and spaced from said member, bringing together the member and tile and applying heat to the decalcomania to release the design layer from the backing layer, and subsequently separating the tile and member.
5. A method according to claim 4, in which the tile is aligned below the heatable member.
6. A method according to claim 5, in which the heatable member is lowered onto the tile.
7. A method according to any of claims 4 to 6, in which the backing layer is held on the member as the tile and member are separated.
8. A method according to any of claims 4 to 7, in which the tile and decalcomania are automatically brought into register.
9. A method according to any of claims 4 to 8, in which the tile and member are automatically brought together and separated.
10. A method of decorating the design on a contoured tile substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
