Abstract

A continuous belt is formed by bonding together ends of belt forming material (20) in abutting relationship by means of a bonding layer (10) over the abutting ends, the bonding layer comprising hot melt adhesive (13) and a reinforced backing layer (11, 12). The bonding layer is placed in position and heat applied to melt the adhesive. The adhesive sets on cooling. The adhesive is a plastics and has a melt temperature above 60 DEG C. The backing layer comprises plastics material with a fibrous reinforcement bonded thereto. The fibrous reinforcement may be glass, other ceramic or a plastics fibre material. The backing layer may be in strip form and comprises a nylon backing 11 and aromatic polyamide filaments reinforcement 12 laterally of the strip or in a woven form. <IMAGE>

Description

Title: Belt Joints DESCRIPTION This invention concerns belt joints and, in particular, sanding belt joints.
Sanding belts are generally made by bending together ends of a strip of sanding material to form a continuous belt. Because the working surface of the sanding material is relatively rough it is not possible simply to bond the ends of the sanding material in overlapping relationship. Furthermore, it is desirable to have as smooth a joint as possible at the working surface of the belt.
To achieve a suitable joint is at present time consuming and costly. The sanding surface at one end of the sanding material strip has to be removed, the ends of the sanding material have to be feathered and adhesive applied to the end of the sanding material to bond the ends together with applied pressure.
It is, therefore, desirable to provide an alternative means of forming such belts that is less time consuming and hopefully less expensive.
An object of the invention is to provide means for forming continuous belts, such as sanding belts, that is relative simple yet effective.
According to the present invention it is proposed that ends of the belt forming material, such as for sanding belts, be bonded together in abutting relationship by means of a bonding layer over said abutting ends, for a sanding belt on non-sanding surfaces thereof, the bonding layer comprising hot melt adhesive on a reinforced backing layer.
This invention envisages, therefore, that the ends of the belt material will be placed in abutting relationship, the bonding layer placed in position and heat applied to melt the adhesive material to bond the reinforced backing layer to the belt material followed by cooling to set the adhesive.
The preferred hot melt adhesive material will be a plastics material. A particular suitable hot melt adhesive comprises a blend of EVA thermoplastic polymers and resins. Preferably the hot melt adhesive will have a melt temperature above 60 C, especially above 80 C, so that heating of a belt during use will not cause the joint to be weakened.
The preferred backing layer also preferably comprises plastics material with a fibrous reinforcement bonded thereto. The backing layer should have a higher melt temperature than the hot melt adhesive. Polyamide, such as nylon is believed to be particularly suitable as a backing layer. The fibre reinforcement may be glass fibre or other ceramic fibre material or may be a plastics fibre material, such as aromatic polyamide filaments.
One particularly suitable backing layer material is believed to be that sold under the trade name KEVLAR which is supplied in strip form and comprises a nylon backing and aromatic polyamide filament reinforcement laterally of the backing strip, but not normal to the edges thereof, or in a woven form.
Preferably bonding material will be provided comprising hot melt adhesive already applied to the fibre reinforcement side of the backing layer.
The invention further provides, therefore, bonding material, particularly but not exclusively for bonding sanding belts, comprising a fibre reinforced backing layer and a coating of a hot melt adhesive.
The invention will now be further described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a plan view of a bonding strip according to the invention; Figure 2 is a side view of the bonding strip of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view of a sanding belt made in accordance with the invention; and Figure 4 is a side view of the belt of Figure 3.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings, a bonding strip 10 comprises a tough plastics layer 11, such as of nylon, onto which is bonded fibres or filaments 12 of aromatic polyamide or other suitable reinforcing material such as of glass or other ceramic fibres. The fibres or filament 12 are arranged generally parallel to each other but transverse to the strip 10 and inclined relative to the edges of the strip 10. Onto the fibres or filaments 12 is bonded a layer 13 of hot melt adhesive, such as a blend of EVA thermoplastic polymers and resins. The hot melt adhesive melts at around 60-80 C and when cooled provides a very strong bond.
Turning now to Figures 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawings, a sanding belt 20 is made by joining ends of a strip of sanding material having a sanding surface 22 on a backing layer 24. The ends of the strip of sanding material are cut diagonally and brought together to abut. On the backing face 24 of the sanding material strip over the abutting ends of the strip is positioned a length of the bonding strip 10 (Figure 1) and heat applied to promote bonding.
On the sanding face of the sanding belt the joint thus made is relatively smooth and by careful selection of the hot melt adhesive a very strong joint can be created, even to the extent that the belt material is more likely to tear under stress than the joint separate.
