Abstract

A sterile needle protector comprising a cover is a hypodermic and butterfly needle storage and protection system which uses surface tension as the force to control the position of the lubricating and sterilising liquid within a specially shaped cylinder with a blank end. <IMAGE>

Description

STERILE NEEDLE PROTECTOR DESCRIPTION The present invention is intended for use in the care and protection of hypodermic needle used for the injection of drugs.
The intention is to store the needle when attached to a hypodermic syringe or injection device (eg pen injection as used for insulin injection) in a sterile environment and also to provide relubrication immediately prior to use.
The device consists of a small vessel (1) into which a resin (2) is machined or moulded (in the case of plastic manufacture). The chamber (3) is filled with a solution which can both lubricate and sterilise. The solution is of known density viscosity and surface tension. The surface tension is important as it provides the dummy fence by which the needle is an insertion.
The principle of operation is that when the needle is inserted capillary action or surface tension causes the solution to travel up the chamber into the needle syringe space (4).

Patent application number 8913716.0 Sterile needle protector 1 Sterile needle protector allows re-use of hypodermic syringe needles and butterfly needles by storage in a sterile lubricated environment.
  2. 2 The sterilising and lubricating liquid is stored in a small hollow specially shaped cylinder.
  3. 3 The internal shape of the cylinder is such that the liquid remains in the lower enlarged chamber, surface tension prevents the liquid from travelling up to the open end of the cylinder. when the needle is passed down into the lower chamber, surface tension forces the liquid up the side walls of the reduced bore hence surrounding the needle with the sterilising lubricating liquid.
  4. 4 The bore at the top end of the cylinder is enlarged and again surface tension prevents further travel of the liquid.
