Description

CLOTHES-HANGER AND SUPPORT BAR This invention relates to a clothes-hanger and support bar to be used together as a means for supporting and storing clothing and the like.
Known methods for storing clothing include simple arrangements comprising shelves, upon which the clothing is laid, and rails and racks, over which the clothing is draped. Although such methods have been successfully used for a very long time, they do not take full advantage of the space available and can result in clothing becoming creased and deteriorating in condition unless special care is taken.
A well known method for storing clothes involves the use of a support bar from which independent clothes-hangers are hung. Such hangers comprise a means for supporting the clothing thereon and a hook which hooks around the bar to allow the hanger to be suspended therefrom. This system has the advantage that separate items of clothing can be moved from one part of the bar to another by simply sliding the hangers as required, thus enabling easy access to any part of the bar in order to remove any hangers therefrom or to place any thereon. However, whilst moving such hangers around it is not uncommon for them to fall to the ground or to swing excessively, thereby allowing clothing to fall to the ground; under such circumstances clothing might typically suffer some deterioration in condition.
Furthermore, when removing clothing from such a hanger it is necessary to remove the hanger from the support bar first, especially if only one hand is being used, otherwise the hanger and/or clothing almost invariably falls to the ground. It is also virtually impossible to place a garment on such a hanger without removing the hanger first, especially where only one hand is to be used.
In addition it is a known problem that hangers such as the one described above are commonly pilfered from hotels, retail outlets and the like, this is because they are easily removed and compatible with most known hanger support bars.
It is believed possible by means of the present invention to provide a hanger and support bar therefor to enable the storage of clothing and the like in a manner that is economical on space, allows easy access to clothing stored thereon and provides a means of support for the items stored that is more stable than known methods, thereby reducing the probability that the stored items will become creased or soiled by becoming displaced from their respective hangers, or by hangers falling to the ground. Furthermore, it is believed possible to provide a hanger that enables the user to place a garment upon, or remove a garment from, a hanger whilst the hanger is still suspended from the support bar. In addition, it is believed possible to provide a hanger and support bar that deters pilferage of hangers from premises open to public use.
According to the present invention there is provided a clothes-hanger in combination with a support bar therefor, a portion of the clothes-hanger being keyed with a part of the support bar to restrain the hanger from swinging laterally of the support bar.
In a preferred embodiment of the present invention th clothes-hanger portion is so keyed with the support bar part as to allow the hanger to slide along the support bar, wherein the clothes-hanger portion is a downward projection from a hook of the clothes-hanger and the support bar part defines an upwardly-directed slot extending longitudinally of the support bar.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of a support bar according to an embodiment of the present invention FIGURE 2 is a cross sectional view of the support bar shown in figure 1; FIGURE 3 is an elevational view of a clothes-hanger according to an embodiment of the present invention which is intended for use with the support bar of figures 1 and 2: FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of three clothes-hangers as shown in figure 3 in use with a support bar as shown in figures 1 and 2.
The illustrated clothes-hanger 2 comprises a clothes-hanger frame 4 which consists of a clothing support member 6 of a generally triangular configuration and a question-mark (?) shaped clothes-hanger hook 8 attached thereto in order to enable the clothes-hanger 2 to be suspended from the support bar 26. Welded to the inner surface of the hook 8 is a downward projection 18.
The illustrated support bar 26 comprises an elongate member 28 having an upwardly-directed slot 30 extending longitudinally thereof. The slot 30 is configured to receive the projection 18 therein, in order that the projection 18 can key with the slot 30. The keying engagement between the projection 18 and the slot 30 restrains the clothes-hanger 2 from swinging laterally of the support bar 26. With such an arrangement it is thereby possible to slide clothes-hangers 2 from one part of the support bar 26 to another, whilst stability is provided to the suspension of the clothes-hangers 2 in the direction laterally of the support bar, hence preventing clothes-hangers 2 from swinging laterally around the support bar in such a manner that would lead to them becoming disengaged. As a result of the extra stability it is easy to remove clothing from the clothes-hanger 2 single-handedly.The shape of the hanger-hook 8 deters pilferers because such a hanger 2 is of no use unless a compatible support bar is posessed.
The clothes-hanger shown would normally be made from metal. However, plastics or wood or any material having suitable similar mechanical properties may be used instead. The clothes-hanger 2 may be constructed as single piece or may be constructed from a number of individual components.
It is therefore believed that by the use of means for preventing clothes-hangers from swinging laterally of the support bar from which they are suspended, thereby greatly increasing the stability of the suspension of the clothing thereon, the present invention reduces the incidence of clothing becoming damaged from falling to the ground without making an inefficient use of available space; due to the increased stablity described above, the present invention enables clothing and the like to be removed from, or placed upon, the hanger whilst it is still suspended from the support bar: this is particularly important where only one hand is being used because it is not necessary to provide extra support to the hanger with a second hand, or to remove the hanger completely. Furthermore, the configuration of the hanger according to the present invention would deter pilferage because there would be no point in taking the hanger unless a compatible support bar was posessed. Such a hanger could not usually be suspended from a typical known support bar.
Many variations are possible within the scope of the present invention, of which the above is merely a specific example. In the above embodiment the neck portion 10, and the clothes-hanger frame 4 lie substantially in the same plane, however, the hook could be made to be rotatable with respect to the clothing support member. It is also possible to make many adaptations to the specific shape of the clothes-hanger frame, for instance for carrying different types of clothing.
