Abstract
A holder (12) particularly intended for holding a can of drink in a vehicle, is made of moulded plastics material and has a circular sectioned substantially cylindrical cup shaped portion (13) connected by a top wall (14) to a substantially square sectioned cylindrical outer wall (15). Pour foam material strips (20) are attached to the base (18) and have adhesive on their lower surfaces covered by a barrier strip (21). The barrier strip can be peeled off, the holder pressed against a suitable surface of a vehicle and the holder will then retain a drinks can. <IMAGE>
Description
CAN HOLDER
This invention relates to a holder particularly intended for holding a can of drink in a car or other vehicle.
Drinks are increasingly sold in individual cans and are frequently bought for consumption in a vehicle while travelling. However, vehicles are not normally equipped with any means for holding the can so that it cannot fall over and spill.
An object of the present invention is to provide a holder adapted for holding a can of drink and for fixing to a vehicle.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a moulded plastics material holder comprising a cylindrical cup shaped portion defining a substantially circular cylindrical hollow of a diameter suitable for holding a can of drink preferably (in the range 66 to 70 millimetres) and having a base provided with attachment means suitable for attachment to an internal surface of a vehicle.
Preferably the attachment means comprises an adhesive covered with a barrier strip so that the user has merely to strip off the barrier strip and press the base onto a convenient substantially horizontal surface of the vehicle.
With advantage, the adhesive is provided on a resilient e.g. foam, material at least 1/2 millimetre thick so that it will stick firmly to a surface which is not entirely smooth.
Preferably the holder has a square external section with side walls separated from the cup shaped portion except by a top connecting wall.
Preferably the cup shaped portion has a depth of at least 30 millimetres and preferably in the range 35 to 45 millimetres.
One embodiment of holder will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings of which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the holder,
Figure 2 is an underneath plan view of the holder
and
Figure 3 is a section on the line III-III of Figure 2
A holder 12 is made of moulded plastics material and has a circular sectioned substantially cylindrical cup shaped portion 13 connected by a top wall 14 to a substantially square sectioned cylindrical outer wall 15 having rounded corners 16. The cup shaped portion 13 defines a hollow 17 of diameter 68 millimetres (in the range 66 to 70 millimetres) having a base 18 connected to the upright cylindrical wall 19 by rounded edges.
Attached to the base 18 are four double-sided adhesive covered foam strips 20, the lower surfaces of which are covered with a barrier layer 21 which can be easily stripped off so that the base of the holder can be pressed against a suitable surface of a car to retain it there.
Preferably the strips 20 are of a resilient material and are in the range 1/2 millimetre to 1 millimetre thick.
The cylindrical hollow is designed to receive firmly and support the base of a can of drink and in this example has a height of 40 millimetres. The cup shaped portion could be made slightly conical and project slightly below the base of the walls 15 so that holders could be stacked one on another slightly nested.
The preferred overall external dimension is a square of 77 millimetres (in the range 75 to 80 millimetres). The holder could be made in other sizes to hold large cans or bottles or glasses or cups and could be made with two or more side by side hollows to contain more than one can.
Claims (10)
1. A moulded plastics material holder comprising a cylindrical cup shaped portion defining a substantially circular sectioned cylindrical hollow of a diameter suitable for holding a can of drink and attachment means secured to the holder and designed for attaching the holder to an internal surface of a vehicle.
2. A holder according to Claim 1 in which the hollow has a diameter in the range 66 to 70 millimetres.
3. A holder according to Claim 2 in which the attachment means comprises an adhesive on the base of the holder.
4. A holder according to Claim 3 including at least one pad of resiliant material attached to the base of the holder and carrying the adhesive and a pull off barrier strip covering the adhesive.
5. A holder according to Claim 4 in which the pad is of foamed material.
6. A holder according to Claim 4 or Claim 5 in which the pad is at least half a millimetre thick.
7. A holder according to any of Claims 1 to 6 which is substantially square in horizontal section.
8. A holder according to any of Claims 1 to 7 having external side walls spaced from the walls defining the hollow and connected thereto solely by a top connecting wall.
9. A holder according to any of Claims 1 to 8 in which the cup shaped portion has a depth in the range 30 to 45 millimetres.
10. A holder substantially as described herein with reference to or as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
