Abstract

The dispersion characteristics of an optical fibre are tailored by the addition of an appropriate quantity of rare earth ions, for example 3 to 300 ppm of erbium.

Description

OPTICAL FIBRES.
This invention relates to optical fibres.
According to the present invention there is provided an optical fibre whose dispersion is tailored to a predetermined characteristic by the addition of a corresponding quantity of rare earth ions.
The addition of dopants, such as rare-earth ions, to optical fibres results in a series of absorption bands, In the regions of absorption we have found that the dispersion is anomalous. By choosing the dopant level to adjust the absorption to a particular level, an overall dispersion in the fibre (anomalous plus intrinsic fibre dispersion) can be selected. The dispersion can be adjusted to such a degree that we can choose the fibre characteristics. Rare earths have previously been used as dopants to produce laser fibres and are particularly good dopant materials therefor.
Their use for lasers is tantamount to saying that very strong absorption is obtained. Erbium in particular demonstrates this effect at 1.5cm. Typically the rare-earth dopant8 are of the order of 3 to 300ppm.
Impurities in fibres and the dispersion they produce are in many cases regarded as undesirable, since transmission loss is an inherent result, or at least a nuisance when performing dispersion measurements.
However in the present case the incorporation of impurities leads to the ability to design fibres with desired dispersion characteristics simply by adjusting the amount of dopant (absorption) i.e. tailor the anomalous dispersion to give a desired overall dispersion characteristic.
Such fibre with tailored dispersion has application in, for example, the following areas, e.g.
for optical pulse shaping (such as soliton generation), for short pulses generation and for spectral shaping in short pulses.
